    Hi,

I just bought an Asus Laptop with Win 8 and I'm finding my way around most of it ok but I can't figure out why the sound 'disappears' every so often, like now! I opened some sound related file which told me the sound was being used by another prog or application. ***??

My old XP would play any sound from any prog at the same time...

The only way I have figured how to get the sound back is to restart, which becomes a bit of a pain...

    Hi,

    Thanks @retiredlearner.

There was indeed an update and so far my sound seems to be working fine. :)

Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated.

Bummer, it just played up on me again. I went to the sound configuration in the Control Panel and got the same story - another program is using this program, shut it down to configure, or words to that effect.

How can I determine what program is using the sound?

Thanks for the link PeteC. I've used Unlocker and Process Explorer before and the Resource Monitor looks a similar and handy tool too but all this talk of 'handles' etc has me a bit confused. When I do a search for what exactly is blocking the sound, what should I be searching for? I entered 'Sound' as a search term and got a few hits.

Anyway, for the past few days it's been ok (crossed fingers)!

I guess you should be searching for the file name of the file which is not playing sound - not 'sound', as shown in the URL I posted.

Beyond that I have no further suggestions.

I thought of that Pete but what results would that show? I'm looking for the blocking file not the affected one. OR, would the affected file lead me to the blocker? I'll give it a go though thanks!

There is a long thread (94 posts) about this problem on eightforums. Starts out talking about HP, but ASUS and Dell users chime in.

Sound device being used by another application

The most accepted solution is to uninstall windows update KB2962407. Google the number for more information about the update. If you choose to uninstall it,

Control Panel > click on Windows Update
Bottom left of page click on Installed Updates
Go to right of page and click Installed On
Look for update KB2962407 installed abt 10 July 2014
Right click on it and Uninstall
After laptop re-starts, Control Panel > Windows Update > Check for updates.
The system will search updates & show KB2962407
Right click on it and press Hide update > press OK
This will stop the update from being re-installed

The thread lists other things to try that helped some users.

Thanks for that @antik. Truth is I got a free Win 8.1 upgrade and the problem disappeared.

Thanks for all your help and my apologies for not marking the thread accordingly.

Good to know you have sound, and what you did to get it. Your follow-up is appreciated.
