A pure windows 8 system, (no previous OS installed).

Is there a way to create an image file/repair disk without using a third party?

havent been able to find anything on the web very conclusive.

Which brings to mind - how to get win 8 back if a hard drive fails.....

    thanks,

If you Navigate to "Control panel - "Windows 7 File Recovery" then click on "Create a System image" this should create a system image file to do just this, - you will need (preferably) an External drive -USB would be ideal) to save the backup onto.
Don`t create it on the main C drive as this would defeat the object of the exercise, (you would still lose the lot if your drive failed)

I have to say that I`ve had no luck using this but you may have better luck! :)

To create a Repair disk, enter "recovery" in the start menu search bar, then change the view to settings &

click on "create a recovery drive "

you can use either a USB flash drive or a CD or DVD instead.

Yea, although you need to change the View by option from the default Category to Large/Small icons to easily find it.

Another easy way is to type "windows 7 file recovery" into the control panel search bar.

Although why they couldn't just carry on calling it "Backup and Restore Center" evades me...

    Still checking.

only have 3 hours, 3 days a week and all of that is spent helping elderly people fix their PC's (mostly virus's and hardware - some very old PC's out here).

Will reply to your advice in next couple of days.

    thanks,

    Tip:
System images are quite large. Before you make one, delete all the temp files, unwanted files, empty recycle bin, etc.

    TonyT,

    Thanks, got that covered.

For a brand new system - verify everything is working, lose the bloat-ware,
check for fragmentation, then image file on DVD and repair/restore CD

    For a used system -
First a scan for any malware, then put their data files on a CD/DVD or
external HD if they have one. Followed by a general cleanup (CCleaner,
Disk Cleaner and ATF. Sometimes they will have over 10,000 pictures (think
the most so far was 17,000 pics) we dump them to a DVD before making an
    image file and repair CD.

Takes a while with multi-systems going at once but at least they get a
clean system backup and maybe we can save them a trip to a commercial
    repair shop.

Of course, sometimes we recommend they buy a new system if they come in
with a museum piece or with a seriously busted PC.

managed to get in a little early and got on a win8 system.
After a bit of fumbling around finally found the control panel and there it was.

    thanks a bunch,
