Oracle VM VirtualBox is "virtualization" software that allows users to run nearly any operating system on top of their existing workstations.

I posted a "How-To" article that should get you up & running in no time.

Yea, I've ditched all my Microsoft VM's and run everything now on Oracle. This includes:

    • Windows XP
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows 7
    • Windows 8
    • CentOS 6.x

    Hi Arie,
Yes I have Windows 8 running on Oracle, but I can not get the Native 1680x1050 Resolution for my 22" Monitor, it is not in the list of resolutions available.
    Any Ideas on that.

Anyone else have a problem with the iso image? I'm getting HAL Initialization error when I try to set it up in a VM. I'm going to try downloading it again later....

    hawk22,

Go to Settings > Display and check Enable 3D acceleration. Increase the Video Memory to 256MB.

While you're at it, also go to System, select the Processor tab and increase the number of CPU's (I use 2 of my possible 8)

You need to power off the VM to make the above changes.

    Hi Arie.

This image - 32 bit English version... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso

I tried it in VirtualBox and in Windows VM. Both failed. Oracle VBox version 4.1.8r75467

Windows VM got a bit further than oracle though but collapsed in a heap!!

I'm inclined to think the download must be corrupt in some way.

Looks like it to me too. You have the latest Vbox version. I haven't tried the 32-bit. I left that a few years ago :)

I tried to use the 64Bit developer preview but the VM groaned and said NO!! so thats why I got the 32 Bit version this time. At 4Gb, I don't think I've got enough system memory to run the 64Bit version along with Win7.

Thanks Arie, haven't done it yet, but will when I can catch some time.

Just wanted to mention to dnmacleod, that my Windows 7 machine is 32 bit running on 4 GB of Ram, but I installed Windows 8 64 bit taking 1.5 Gig of the System Ram and it seems OK. I guess it would not be running at its best, but OK just to try out Windows 8.

One fresh download later and still the same problem.... :(

In the Oracle VM I get the following error:

    Windows Recovery Environment
Your PC needs to be repaired
    An unexpected error has occurred
    Error code 0xc0000260
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media (like a disk or usb device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

    Press Enter to try again
Press 8 for alternate boot options. .......

I do, however, get the following message when I start the VM. Do you think this is relevant?

VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Certain guests (e.g. OS/2 and QNX) require this feature and will fail to boot without it.

Yeah - I went through every option. Looks like my MOBO doesn't support VT.. :(

I'll have another look though just in case I missed it...

Do you reckon a BIOS update will be likely to give that functionality? I don't particularly like doing BIOS updates unless they're unavoidable.

    Does your CPU support VT-x?

Go to http://ark.intel.com, type in your CPU, (for example "E8400" [sans the quotes]), click the resultant link (if applicable) and then scroll down to the "Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x)" line. If you see "Yes" to the right of that, your CPU is good to go.

Next step is your motherboard and BIOS.

    Of course it does!

If it is the MB in your profile, it is in the same place as on my BIOS (both Asus), so have a look at the picture in the article (hover over the (Figure) after "Usually this will be located on the "Advanced" or "Chipset" menu in your BIOS ".

I checked with your M/B's manual...
