Hey guys, first post here.. Think its in the right spot.
I've recieved a blue screen with a BCCode of 0x50 and it blames a Creative sound driver "Probably caused by : P17.sys ( P17+29c28)" the driver is old (2007) and I will update it but my debugging skills are somewhat limited.. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why it is causing the BSOD other than its an old driver or because the requested data was not in memory. I was looking for a bit of an explanation is anyone is willing to inform a noob. Hopefully then I can understand these logs more then. Thanks for any advice and I've uploaded the dump file...

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

If you want to debug the file you will have to do it your self - we are happy to look at debug logs - with no guarantee that we can read them in their entirity, this is a very specialised task requiring special knowledge. We do not download dump data for analysis.

This is the simplest way of debugging your dump file .....

    Download BlueScreenView ((in Zip file)
    No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

It is highly unlikely that anyone here would be able to tell you why the driver caused a BSOD - just be grateful that the driver was mentioned in the BSOD so that you can take the appropriate action.

A driver dating back to 2007 would have been made before windows 7. I would suggest your first move should be to try and get a Windows 7 compatable driver and then see if the problem persists.

Unfortunately when a BSOD occurs the named driver or application is not always the cause. Drivers are a common cause but it can also be due to hardware problems, hard drive and memory faults being the most common.

Try to get the driver replaced and then when you have BlueScreenView installed we can look at your next BSOD dump file if it occurs again. It can sometimes help if you tell us what processes you were running at the time of the crash. Also, it is worth trying to run the PC in safe mode for a while to see if it still crashes, if it doesn't that usually points the finger at a driver issue.

Sorry, I've already had a look at it but was after some more information as to why the driver was causing the issue. It worked fine before but since reinstalling Windows 7 the problem came out of no where. I understand its a very specialised field which is why I thought I would put a post up on a debugging forum of sorts :)

Again sorry I didn't realise members don't download the files (only skimmed rules). In anycase the problem was solved with an update. I'm still a little curious about why but its not a big issue. Thanks for your replies.

    Hello,

P17.sys is from Creative a major culprit that causes BSOD on Windows 7 machine. It's best to use Daniel_k's Support Pack is much more stable and good performance.

    Hope this helps,
    Captain
