Is there any way to do a repair to Win 7 Home Premium without overwriting any other files or programs? (Just the OS)

    Pete,
Since the laptop I'm using (Sony Vaio) came pre-installed with Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, please answer the following questions regarding using an acceptable copy of Win 7 to use for Repair. The self generated recovery disks will only restore to out of box condition and delete all my files.
    1) Does the copy have to be 64 bit?
    2) Does the copy of Win 7 have to be Home Premium only?
    3) Can I use a Win 7 Upgrade Disk?
    4) I have a copy of Win 7 Ultimate Full Install I got at a Microsoft Developers Conference, however it is probably older and is 32 bit. Can it be used?
    5) No matter which version I use for the repair do I put in the original key for my copy or the new one and then have to deal with Microsoft to change it back to my original key?
    THANKS

Before I attempt to answer your questions I must pose one of my own - Why do you want to repair Windows?, what are the issues?, maybe we can sort those out on WindowsBBS for you.

I'll answer your questions to the best of my ability ....
If you are running 64 bit - Yes, the code for 32 bit and 64 bit is very different.
AFAIK a Windows 7 DVD contains all versions.
    I don't know for sure.
Not if you are running 64 bit. Sidenote - Windows 7 SP1 is out only in beta at present so an older copy would not be an issue - you would need to re-install critical updates & patches though.
If a key is requested you must use your existing key.

Another point to bear in mind is that your install is OEM by Sony - I cannot be sure that a retail DVD will effect a repair, so basically it's back to my first point - what is the issue and can we solve it for you?

If you want to try a repair using any of the methods which seem feasible it would be wise to use the built-in imaging software in Windows 7 to image your drive to independent media and create the recovery disk.

Since recovering the system have you applied the updates that may have been wiped out by the restore?

Have you tried another restore to an earlier point in time?

It is possible to monitor the boot process using Process Monitor from MS, a tool I have just come across, but it is complex and I would need to make some trials on my computer to familiarise myself with the operation of the program and the analaysis of the results obtained in the boot log. In theory, I guess, it may give a pointer to what is slowing down the boot time.

I've taken all the updates. Funny thing...When I first restored to an earlier date (about 3 days before the problems), I had many choices going back in time to much earlier dates. Since then I wanted to try it again as you suggested to an earlier date but my choices go back only for about 1 week!. When I check off SHOW MORE DATES nothing happens. Somehow I lost all the prior dates.

I have restore points and there are new ones being created. It's just that all the ones prior to me restoring have gone.

    RESOLVED!!!
Found a random error stating there was a corrupt dll in my Webroot Spy Sweeper program. This program has always caused problems in the past. It caused programs to slow down or freeze so I had turned it off. I even had it off so as not to load at startup. I just used it for sweeps on occasion. It was a free gift with the laptop. Well, I uninstalled the program and everything returned to normal. I'm lucky to have found the problem before I gave up and ended doing a fresh install. I guess you now can tell my opinion of Webroot.

That's great news and a great bit of detective work :)

For weekly manual checks of your system there is nothing better than MalwareBytes.
