Hello, I cannot print to a PhotoSmart C4680.

Customer has a 2 PC network. One machine uses Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and the other uses Windows XP Pro 32-bit.

The printer is attached to the XP machine and is shared. With the Win 7 machine I can see the printer thru the network, can connect to it and add it. I downloaded the correct driver for this unit.

It does show up in printers and devices. The problem is every time I go to print, it says print failed. No matter what I do printing fails.

Is this an issue with the 64-bit and 32-bit? HP support sent me a link to the basic driver. I recall I downloaded a 64-bit driver and that did not work either.

    Thanks

I did not look in there. Never thought of that. Is it possible that 32-bit and 64-bit printing is an issue here?

Hey thanks a lot! The article was awesome and makes total sense. I never realized this before.

I will make time to go by their office and do this for them. I have saved the article and print it later.

I will post my results and then if successful we can close this thread.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Hi I tried the article but unfortunately I was not able to get it to work.

The printer is connected to and shared from the XP Pro. I went into sharing and then Additional Drivers. The problem is inside that window there is no way to add a driver from disk.

It shows a few options and x64 was already selected. Is there anything else to try? I really am determined to make this work.

Hello, yes I have the most recent drivers. I forgot to check the logs when I was there I will write that down for next time.

I have an idea and let me know if this could work. Both PC's are in the same office across from each other. What if I physically took the printer off the XP machine and connected it directly to the Win 7 PC. I would then install the drivers on it and do a test print.

Then install it back in the XP Pro machine. Could I then change the port in the Win 7 machine and point it to the XP machine and have it print that way?

It may or may not but it would certainly indicate if you are using the correct drivers or not.

I checked with the Event Logs and the only thing I have seen is failed to install driver on July 6th. I am going to connect the printer locally and then change the port to reflect the other PC.

I got it to work! I physically removed the printer from the XP machine and connected to Win 7 machine.

I installed the basic driver and then proceed to do a test print. Once that was done and I installed it back in the XP machine.

Finally I added a network printer and once it found the HP connected to XP machine I clicked add and it installed without a problem. The big test was printing so I did a test print and it worked. I then proceeded to print from Word, IE, etc.. It all worked.

I am very glad this is resolved. It seems when adding locally, the correct driver is always there so even though I added it thru the network, it still uses the driver and not the one on the other PC. I hope this can help anyone with this problem.
