Under c:\users i'm showing 2 folders that the icon has a
small picture of a lock in the lower left-hand of the icon.

I had to change the user name, delete accounts, re-create
users but still i wind up with the 2 original folders with a
    lock....

what does this "lock" mean and can i get rid of them
without damaging the 2 real users accounts?

    Hope this is clear enough......

The lock icon in Windows 7 indicates that the file or folder can only be accessed by you, and not any other user on your computer ( "private ").

Not sure i understand that, Arie.

Ex: 2 total users - celeste and guest
celeste = real owner/user/admin, ignore guest.

    1. celeste user was somehow messed-up.
    2. I created a new user called "clif ".
    3. I renamed celeste user to celeste1 user.
    4. reboot
    5. I deleted celeste user.
    6. reboot
    7. I renamed clif user to celeste user.
    8. reboot
    9. I deleted celeste1 user.
    10. reboot

Clif is no longer shown as a user during login or under
    the computer management options.
I tried to delete clif user folder from the C drive but it wont let me, has the padlock on the folder.

    confused,

You can't delete the "clif" folder, it is used by the user "celeste ".

When you rename a user, the user folder does not get re-named.

This is how to achieve what you wanted to do:
    1. create a brand new account as part of admin group.
    2. login as new user.
    3. remove the old user & select "keep files ".
    4. take ownership og old user's files.

Renaming users is a bad practice that will cause confusions and issues.

Arie - I guess they had some reason for doing it that way but it escapes me.....

TonyT - If i take ownership of clif, then i can delete it (without damage to
    celeste)?

    thanks guys,

Your best bet would be to take ownership of the account you renamed, copy the user files (bookmarks, multimedia, email, docs, etc) and put 'em in its own dir called backup.. The delete that remamed account. Then create a new one with admin rights and name it appropriately. Then logon to the new account and take back ownership of backup.
