My PC runs under Windows 7. I cannot get the Windows sounds to play, nor can I get sound when a video or a sound CD is played on the computer. I've checked SOUND and TROUBLESHOOTING in the Control Panel. I have a Realtek sound card, new witht the PC last October. The only sound at all that I can get is the slight thud in the speakers when they are turned on or when the headphones are plugged into the CD drive.

Hi tonywils9. Have you installed the latest drivers for your Realtek sound card? What is the name of the sound card?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

The sound card is integrated into the motherboard. The chip is a Realek High Definition Audio chip. There is an entry for the Realtek Manager in the control panel, but it seems to be set fine. The motherboard is Intel Core (M3) CPU E7500. (I can' tupdate my system specs because I can't find the Edit Options tab on the Windows BBS site.)

Try installing the latest version of the Realtek HD Audio Driver from here. After you have installed the driver reboot the computer and now see if you have sound.

I have a Compac Presario computer, Windows 7 and in checking HP website, found that Realtek high defintion audio chip sound software was updated 11/2009.
Checking Windows system sounds is configured and speakers are not muted may help in this instance.

I gave up on this problem after trying everything I could and took the PC into the shop that built it for me. They plugged everything in and the sound worked fine there. I brought it home and plugged it back in -- no sound! I disconnected my speakers,p[lugged them backin, restarted and now I have sound! Don't ask my why this worked!

Sounds like dodgy speaker sockets or leads to me - leave them well alone now :)
