I just installed win 7 from my free upgrade. Is there a way to disable the taskbar thumbnail previews? There was a way with earlier builds but they do not work with the final release. Does anyone know how to do this?

Run in Basic Mode which disables Aero (Right click Desktop > Personalise)

    Thanks Pete

I knew about that one. Was hoping for something less intrusive. I like some of the effects of aero.

Have a look at Ultimate Windows Tweaker which has the option to disable windows preview (thumbnails) in the Task Bar.

Thanks again Pete. I did the google search before posting here. The tweaks on google only work for earlier versions of win 7. For some reason MS decided to take back control of these "mini windows ". I'll take a look at the tweaking software when I get a chance. Thanks again.

The gpedit.msc method will not even come up on the final version of win 7. Try it. It has been well hidden or eliminated. That's how I discovered that all the info on google only worked for the earlier versions. Thanks again Pete.

It does for me - running as administrator.

Try an elevated command prompt .....

Orb > All Programs > Accessories - right click Command Prompt > run as adminstrator.

I am advised that gpedit is not available in Home Basic, Starter and possibly the Home Premium versions, so that may explain why you are unable to run it.

The RC1 was Windows 7 Ultimate if you recall :)

I am running home premium. I guess that explains it. Doesn't make sense though.

It was similar in XP and no doubt Vista which I never ran seriously.

Makes perfect sense: The average home user has no use for a policy editor ;)

But I tried it, and that policy is indeed not working.

Thanks for the conformation Arie. I guess I'll have to upgrade to pro or ultimate.

Why? Just to have Policy Editor? That's an expensive proposition... and like I said: it doesn't work anyway!

I ended up with home premium because of the free upgrade. My laptop is used for work as well as home and I've been using professional versions for years. Are you saying the policy editor is not working in all versions of seven? I thought Steve said he got it to work on his machine.

Policy editor works just fine, just not the policy you asked for in this thread (and maybe others?).
