    Hi everyone, was hoping somebody could answer a question for me about paging files. I have 5 physical hard drives (6 if you count my dual boot Win 64 bit partition). I noticed something peculiar, all the drives had paging files of a fairly large size. As an example one had 8,182,000 KB. I thought paging files were used as an overflow memory when you run out of RAM. And I assumed that once you moved to another hard drive or shut down your pc entirely the contents of the page files would be erased. Instead each of my drives has large paging files. Is this normal? Or do I have a problem. Thanks, Brian

    Thanks Neil, appreciate the info, though most of it I already knew. Keep having BSOD page fault in non paged area or some such. That's what started me looking into the page files to begin with. I've tried letting Widows manage the page files....no luck, still the occasional BSOD. So I went in and set the maximum size for each drive at 40,000 MB. I still get the occasional page fault in non paged area. That's why I'm trying to find out if all this data should be kept in the page files when I change drives or after shut down. But I do appreciate the help! Brian:)

    Please take the time to fill in your UserCP > System Details as it helps us to better understand your problem if we know about your comp.
    Speccy is good software to use if you don't know exactly what's inside your box.

    Also, make sure you scroll to the bottom of the page in UserCP and follow the instructions to show and SAVE your details.

    A "page fault in a non paged area" is NOT a problem with the page file, it's most likely a problem with RAM.

    The non paged area is an area of RAM dedicated to Windows system files that are necessary to run Windows. That area is reserved just for those files. In some cases, the error can be caused by software that alters or changes the contents of the non paged area, usually an antivirus program which has system privileges. Most all other software cannot modify the non paged area.

    What happens is Windows "looks" for data it knows is supposed to exist in the non paged area and cannot find it because something altered it or removed it. The most common causes are (in this order): bad/failing ram, malware, antivirus software, corrupted disk sectors.

    Hey Tony, thanks for the info. You said "The most common causes are (in this order): bad/failing ram, malware, antivirus software, corrupted disk sectors." 1. Failing ram....is there any way to determine if this is happening? I'm set up for dual boot, Win 7 32 bit & Win 7 64 bit. When I right click my computer and select properties in 32 bit it shows 16 Gigs of ram but only 2.99 Gigs usable. I know 32 can only use 4 Gigs. When I boot into 64 it shows 16 Gigs. My ram is Corsair 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz.
    2. Malware....I run Malwarebytes Anti Malware Premium, and scans never find anything except pup's which I always quarantine.
    3. Anti Virus software.....I run Zone Alarm Extreme Security. When I run virus scans it never finds anything.
    4. Corrupted Disk Sectors....for maintenance I run System Mechanic both automatically and I use the individual tools to check the disks.
    I still get BSOD's all the time...almost every time I use my pc. Usually it says "page fault" but not always. The stupid screen only stays on for 1 second before the pc shuts down so I can't read what it's telling me. By the way Microsoft what the point in having a Blue Screen full of info if there is no way to read it????
    Any suggestions as to what to do now? By the way thinking it was a page fault problem I've already tried letting windows manage the page fault size as well as manually setting them for way bigger than it should ever need....that didn't help either. Thanks, Brian:(

    As Steve mentioned, http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm. You want the "MemTest86 V6.2.0 Free Edition" in either the "Image for creating bootable CD (ISO format)" or the "Image for creating bootable USB Drive "



    32-bit Windows only has enough unique memory addresses to assign one to each byte of RAM on up to 4 GB worth of RAM. So, take that 4 GB minus the amount of RAM in your video card that needs a unique address for each byte of memory, minus more memory addresses needed for other hardware in your computer, etc., etc., and you end up with only 2.99 GB worth of memory addresses left to use for Windows.

    Let Windows manage the page files and set them to the default values.
    After you test your RAM, move on to testing for malware commonly missed by your security software by starting a thread in the malware forum here.

    Still need help!

    I shut down the automatic reboot on BSOD and quickly got a blue screen. Oh, I also ran a memory test....all ram tested as good. The only "stop" information on the blue screen was *** STOP: 0X00000050 (0XB06B9000,0X00000000,0X832C178A,0X00000000)....................I tried entering this on the Reviver Soft Blue Screen Helper, but it didn't find anything. I entered all of it from the asterisk's to the end parenthesis....I wasn't sure what of that info I was supposed to put in, some of it, or all of it. Since that didn't work I went the Event Viewer route. Only problem is, once again, I don't know what of all this information I should copy and paste into the Reviver Soft Blue Screen Helper. So I have copied 3 separate events. In hopes that somebody can tell me what of all this info I should put into the Reviver Soft Blue Screen Helper. So here are the 3 events:

    Hey Pete, that's very very interesting! Thanks a lot for that info. I'm going to do another Acronis disk imiage before I try it....just in case, but that sure sounds like that's on the right track. I really appreciate it.     Also, what version of Zone Alarm? ZA has been associated with causing various bsods. If all else fails, remove ZA and all of its components and see if the errors continue or not.

    Well, I tried the hotfix.....no joy! Still getting constant BSOD's. Thank God I made a disk image. I'm going to restore my computer and then the only thing left on the list would be Zone Alarm. So I have another question, I've always used and trusted ZA and am quite familiar with it. I do have another option though. We have 4 pc's and ZA only covers 3 so I recently bought AVG Ultimate for my wife pc. Is AVG a good product? Because it looks like I may have to uninstall ZA and switch to AVG on my pc. I know it's an antivirus, is it also a firewall? On my wife's pc I'm running ZA free firewall along with AVG. But if I have to completely get rid of ZA to fix this page fault BSOD problem where does that leave me firewall wise? Thanks for the help, Brian:)

    I'm runnig Comodo Free Internet Security on two computers with good results. It's a Firewall/AntiVirus combo and I have made no customization, just installed and it works fine "out of the box ".

    Thanks SpywareDr and Christer. But on the one hand I'm very skeptical of just how effective a Windows built firewall would be, and Comodo Free Internet Security sounds great.....to great.....where's the catch? I've learned that nothing given away free in this world comes without a catch.....addware, malware, data mining, whatever. So again my question is does anyone have first hand knowledge of AVG? Is AVG a good product? Because it looks like I may have to uninstall ZA and switch to AVG Ultimate on my pc. I know it's an antivirus, is it also a firewall? Thanks all for the info, Brian
