I do not know what happened or why.
Two weeks ago I awoke and noticed all my subfolders in the My Documents folder have been emptied and dumped into one horrifying mess in the My Documents folder. I now have 7100 files to sort through and put back into the subfolders - manually :(.
A lot of the files (easily 75%) have file names that by looking at them one does not know what the file actually contains.
In that mess is also My Pictures folder which I have subfolders as well and 90% of those (4000/7100) have names that doesn't give a clue as to what the picture is of/about.
    Does anyone know:
    1. is there a way to recover the My Documents and My Pictures folders to what they were two weeks ago (before the chaos hit)?
    2. what would have caused such a thing so I can remedy it now before going through tedious, long, manual work of allocating the files to the correct subfolders?
System is Windows 7 Home Premium Sv Pack 1, Build 7601
    Lenovo ThinkPad 64 bit OS

Did the sub folders have meaningful names that helped you to know what's in them?

    Are the folders still there?

I can't even think how this could have happened except for a lot of Human Intervention. So odds are, it'll take the same Human Intervention to put all back.

Would a System Restore to an earlier time before the mix up be worth trying? Neil.

    Thanks Neil
I thought System Restore didn't effect user library folders.
Nevertheless I did try two weeks ago when it first happened and I received notification after going through 15 minutes of it working that it was unable to restore the system. I don't know if what happened has anything to do with it. Because does appear that possibly some system files got dumped into the My Documents pile of files as well.

A system restore isn't supposed to touch personal files.

    Thanks Steve
Yes the subfolders provided the file distinction and yes they are still there.
Your prognosis is what I am afraid of...
but I am keeping my fingers crossed looking for a hail mary...
