I recently encountered the black screen of death after logging in. I can't access anything outside of the Task Manager. Restarting explorer.exe just causes the Task Manager to freeze up; Startup Repair doesn't find any problems, and System Restore doesn't have any restore points to use.

Is there anything I can do to solve this myself?

Who is the manufacturer of the computer? What is the model of the computer?

It's a Gateway NV53A laptop. I can't get any more detailed specs, unfortunately, as I can't access dxdiag or anything else on the computer itself.

Last Known Good Config brings me to the same black screen, and safe mode does the same, albeit displaying 'Safe Mode' in all four corners, and 'Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)' at the top.

It seems a lot of Gateway N53A users were experiencing this problem a few years back and without any real solution. You have to scroll down a little to get to the title page.N53 Service Guide

UPDATE: I'm now getting error messages popping up on the Black Screen. I'll post them as they come up:

'There was a problem starting C:\Windows\system32\WerConCpl.dll

    Error performing inpage operation.'

Hi CaptainPanda, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    Follow these steps:

    1. Enter the advanced recovery options.
    2. Choose the Command Prompt option in the System Recovery Options window.
    3. When the Command Prompt window opens type the following commands, exactly as written below, in the order in which they are presented, and press enter after entering each command:

    • Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    • Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
    • BootRec.exe /fixmbr
    • BootRec.exe /fixboot
    • sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
    • chkdsk c: /r
    • exit
    4. If you receive any warnings or notifications asking you are you sure press Y to confirm.
    5. After exiting the Command Prompt window, reboot the computer and see if you can boot into Windows 7 successfully.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

When I enter this command, it says 'Windows cannot find the file specified.'

    Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

This command says 'Total identified Windows installations: 0'

    sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

'Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.'

I went through the entire list of commands, and still booted to a black screen.

Repair Install needs the Windows product key; my OS came with my computer, and if I did have one, I lost the key. Can I find it somewhere on my computer?

It should be on the bottom of the laptop. From W8 on - it's in the BIOS. Neil.

You don't need your product key if you are doing a repair install of Windows 7. Do you have a Windows 7 DVD?

Neil and Evan look at this. You're supposed to be able to use this even if the machine can't boot. Scroll to the bottom of the page to download. NiSoft Product Key

Unfortunately not. I may have had it once upon a time, but that was several years ago, and I've moved three times since, and it most likely got lost in the shuffle.

I tried this, but I'm not certain that it got the right key; there was a problem with it on the Microsoft Software Recovery site.

You will need to create a Windows 7 DVD to repair the Windows 7 OS. You can find Windows 7 SP1 ISO files here, Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads.

You will need to download a torrent client to download the Windows 7 ISO image. Download the portable version of uTorrent and run the program.

After the program opens, click on the add link button and paste the download link of the Windows 7 ISO file that matches the version of Windows 7 that you have installed.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD.

After you have created your Windows 7 DVD follow the instructions from here to perform a repair installation of Windows 7, How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7.

What was it that possibly caused this problem? What are the odds of this happening again?

I haven't encountered this issue on any Windows 7 computer so if everything is working fine then pay attention to what programs you install so that if it happens again you will be able to tell what program you installed that caused the issue.
