I have been trying to test some laptop batteries and have used the 'powercfg -energy' command ONCE. Having looked at the results in the html file I made some changes as recommended and restarted my machine.

On trying to use the same command again, I received the following message:

    "C:\Users\MyName\Desktop>powercfg -energy
    Enabling tracing for 60 seconds...
    Observing system behavior...
Could not open the NT Kernel Logger. The NT Kernel Logger is already in use. Ensure that all other performance monitoring utilities, including Reliability and
Performance Monitor are not currently in use.

    C:\Users\MyName\Desktop> "

The only program I had running was the command window.

How do I get the 'powercfg' command to work again?

Might be a dumb question, but you did shut down before doing the next one. Not just leave the AC plugged in and switch batteries.

There is only one NT Kernel Logger session. If the session is already in use, the StartTrace function returns ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS.

Log out, then login to run another trace.

Thanks to you TonyT and MrBill for your answers and suggestions.

Interestingly I have just run three consecutive sessions without powering down, restarting or logging off. Here is a copy of the command line window. Between each I made some changes, saved them and had a look at the reports. Some of the advice I accepted and some rejected. I hope they were the right choices. I was trying to reproduce my previous experience, but as you can see I was not able to do so.

As a matter of interest, I did not find any very useful information about my battery. I did find out about power settings though. Here is the battery info:

    Battery:Battery Information
    Battery ID 3580LGC-LGCEV06047
    Manufacturer LGC-LGC
    Serial Number 3580
    Chemistry LION
    Long Term 1
    Design Capacity 56160
    Last Full Charge 50522

I think if I do get the problem repeating in the future I will have an idea what else to try.

    Thanks again.

PS I did not change the battery in this test. Could this be a significant factor?

You'll probably get a better battery status report in the bios. Most laptops have a battery section, some, like Dell Latitudes, have battery calibration as well as status.

Thanks for your tips, TonyT and lj50.

I am using my HP Pavilion. I have not long had it back after the GPU was reballed. I had all sorts of dire warnings from a local repair shop about the process, but my laptop is working fine now, I even got my DVD drive working again, the subject of an old post. Seems it was a hardware fault after all as I have the same SSD back in use with the identical software. Arie if you read this, please note! And another benefit, it was a lot cheaper than getting another Win 7 licence.

I have tried to load the battery check from HP but another good one is to be found in Ubuntu 14.04, or perhaps I should not mention it here! I have an HP Pavilion with Ubuntu so I shall do the checks with that one in future.

    Thanks again, guys.
