Clicking Windows 7 Help & Support icon on the Desktop screen fails to open. What procedure is required to reactivate H&S. Thanks Bobby.

Steve, carried out reboot, no response after Hour Glass shows for a few seconds. Start>type Help & Support -- clicking H&S has no response either. I will guess, the software has either been uninstalled or now corrupted. Can H&S be downloaded from a source? as I am unable to locate H&S in Microsoft Web site. Thanks Bobby.

Hi Bobby. Does Help and Support open if you boot the computer into Safe Mode?

I have at present Wireless half keyboard and find that the F keys fail to open computer in Safe mode. I presume you require press the Shift/F11 key together. I tried the cmd and sfc scannow as Administrator. It completed the scan but unable to open the log as access denied. Clicking the H&S icon or in the Start H&S refuses to open and the previous hour glass no longer shows as previously.

One way to access Safe mode in Windows 7 is to turn off the computer, wait a few seconds, power it back on and start tapping the [F8] function key.

Another way to do it is, in Windows 7, click Start, type in msconfig and press [Enter]. Click the "Boot" tab, select the little box next to "Safe boot ", click "Apply" > "OK" and then reboot. To get back into "normal" mode, while you're in Safe mode do the same thing but this time remove the checkmark from the little "Safe boot" box.

My sincere thanks for valuable instructions. Safe Mode -- H&S icon still fails to open. I feel confidant that H&S software has some how been removed from computer as after various checks, I am unable to find any references or file except for the H&S icon. I am really baffled as to how this software has simply vanished. In Control Panel, search still find topics, except H&S returns an 0 find.

Have you tried HP for their Help and Support download?
You've also got the problem that your comp was updated from Vista to W7 by HP. I would ask these questions at HP Forums. Neil.

Did you try using use Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly? It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try restoring an earlier system image or backup.

HP will not give any assistance, when computer is out of guarantee. Unfortunately, Restore fails to complete any Backups, as caption shows a file is missing. It was suggested that I remove all backups to clear any faults but this would leave computer without any restore facility. I have right or wrong carried out this procedure.

Do you have an earlier system image or backup you could restore? If not, try Fred Langa's "Win7's no-reformat, nondestructive reinstall." It's a fast, nondestructive, in-place, total reinstall of Windows 7 that won't damage your user accounts, data, installed programs, or system drivers.

I tried your suggestion, did not find any file to download. Reading the contents, it states that you require a copy of Windows 7 to carryout the procedure, as I said disk that I have is to upgrade from Windows Vesta to Windows 7 64 bit.

Before performing a repair install lets try this method to repair your system:

    1. Download the portable version of Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One). (Make sure you have your computer running in a clean boot state BEFORE running repairs. If you need assistance with performing a clean boot then follow the instructions here, How to perform a clean boot in Windows)

    2. Download the portable zipped folder to your desktop.

    3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder, and then right click on the Repair_Windows.exe file and select run as administrator.

    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 3 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.

    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 4.

    6. Click on the Step 4 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.

    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Step 5 tab.

    8. On the Step 5 tab go ahead and create a new system restore point before starting the repair by clicking on the Create button under the System Restore area. Screenshot.

    9. Once that is done click on the Start Repairs tab.

    10. On the Start Repairs tab click on the Start button and select Run when prompted. Screenshot.

    11. The Windows Repairs window will open. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated below:

    Reset Registry Permissions
    Reset File Permissions
    Reset Service Permissions
    Register System Files
    Repair WMI
    Repair Windows Firewall
    Repair Internet Explorer
    Repair MDAV/MS Jet
    Repair Hosts Files
    Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Start Menu Icons Removed by Infections
    Repair Icons
    Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    Remove Temp Files
    Repair Proxy Settings
    Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services to Default Startup
    Restore Important Windows Services
    Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

    12. Then when those checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.

    13. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.

    14. The process could take some time so please be patient.

    15. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.

    16. See if there is any difference after performing the above steps.

Evan I hope you didn't mine that I referred BobbyScot to the Malware forum. Didn't mean to step on anyone's toes. He is having so many issues with this install I also suggested that he might try to reinstall the OS.
