I have been using remote desktop to access my home PC (Win 7) for eons. This morning it suddenly won't work. There was an automatic update this morning at 2AM local time. On the remote side it prompts for the login credentials then the status messages look normal and immediately after the securing connection status is displayed the window on the remote side closes. I have looked through events on the target computer and see no recognizable errors. I seems unlikely that this was not introduced by this update. So the question is, what did this update do to break RDS and how can I fix it? Would it be helpful to post the update log from this morning? There is nothing in it that means anything to me. TIA.

Hi gw1500se. Have a look in Event Viewer and see if you can find any errors that pertain to Remote Desktop.

You might try performing a clean boot in Windows 7 and see if that solves the issue, How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

Thanks for the reply. As I said there were no recognizable errors in the event log. I did reboot several times.

You rebooted the home machine correct?

I'd double check and make sure the home User Profile is a member on the RDP Group.

Several times, yes. Yes to the RDP group as well. As I said, this has been working for eons until the update that morning.

By far the simplest fix is to use Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

If that doesn't help, try restoring an earlier system image or backup.

Thanks again. I considered that and may well do it. But I am looking for confirmation that the update caused it for everyone, not just me. If that is the case then MS will likely have a fix out soon and I will wait as I can use TeamViewer in the meantime.

Yes. I had to uninstall KB 2984972 and that fixed it.
