I like All my Win7 folders/files to open up in the List format style because it is so much more compact but they all seem to open up in the Detail style.

How can I make the List style always the default?

Open a folder and set the view to your liking - then go to Tools > Folder Options - Apply to Folders.

It's not infallible - as it says 'folders of this type' - there may be other folder types which will need to be set up using this method.

    Pete,

I'm mainly talking about custom shortcuts that I made for .tif or .txt folders/files in my C: drive that don't have a Tools option in the Properties section. Opening them directly also doesn't show a Tools option.

On the top of the screen just under the Address bar do you have the Menu bar visible? If not in C:\ drive right click next to the address and put a check next to Menu bar.

Alternatively click on Organize > Layout and check Menu Bar. Tools are not to be found under Properties.
