Every time I load MS Word (07) - or one of a number of other applications - recently, I get a dialog asking if I wish the program to make changes to my computer. This is new to me!

I have tried every setting in User Account Control that appears safe without getting rid of this annoyance. Is there some other way?

I have MS Office 2007, but I don't recall ever seeing the UAC prompt after clicking on Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

Something doesn't sound right. Maybe you should run the Word (or Office) repair option in the Programs and Features page.

Thanks but that sounds a tad risky. I'd prefer a means of declaring Word (and other programs) trustworthy - if anyone knows of one.

Thanks James but it does, and I have. I actually ran the repair from the disc. Still got the annoyance.

I use a combination of WinPatrol and UAC to protect my computer.

I wish I had an answer for your UAC problem. My only other suggestion is to try the registry cleaner that comes with CCleaner, but that is just my person opinion. Some here frown on the use of reg cleaners.

Edit: Here is something that may worth looking into...

Let me know if this works. I may try it myself for certain programs.

As indicated, UAC should not show up when trying to run an office app.

I see no thread in the Malware removal forum, so I can't say your system is malware free. At this point I'm highly suspicious it is not.

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

In fixing something else, it appears that this problem has been fixed.

Properties --> Compatibility for WINWORD.EXE was (for some reason) set to Windows XP SP3. I changed that to Windows 7 and have had no further problems.

Why it was set that way remains a mystery. I've been on W7 for more than a year.

Thanks again to all who responded to my plea.

Again, I would not trust your system.

I don't know what I can do about it, Arie. I have just had a go-round with "qvo6" and "Ask ", a couple of browser hijackers that neither MalwareBytes not Kaspersky Internet Security could detect or fix. In getting those fixed my system has had a more intimate inspection than you get from your proctologist. If there is anything left, it's laying low at the moment.

Thanks for the concern, and if things blow up then WindowsBBS will be first to know.
    Cheers.
