Doing a fresh complete install of w2k pro. Formatted the hard drive then started the install from CD. System gets to the restart and freezes before any progress shown on the progress bar. Any recommendation? I have not run into this one before. I thought it might be a memory prob so installed an addeitional set getting me up to 320M. System is a celeron 900Meg. With an 8 g hard drive.

It may be having trouble running drivers. Try removing any added hardware (eg PCI cards) and reinstall again.
u mention format but ... is this a partition kill? did u do a 'clean' install here is what i mean. format doesn't cut it alone for clean in my book.
check u'r bios options and all peripheral HW - particularly USB stuff. eg - if u've got a USB printer, disconnect it during install. if u've got a USB keyboard/mouse, setup BIOS for 'legacy usb support' or any proper options it may have regarding such.
update bios if need be
update any Firmware really on all HW
check u'r pc maker's docs for advice particular to that PC and the OS u'r installing. there may be caveats. FAQs are good to have
Talking win2k pro. I did a restore of all bios to original settings. The computer has only a modem card other that what is installed on the motherboard. I will try disconnecting the card and see if it might be a driver problem, but it seems to early in the reboot to be a driver to me, but then I been wrong before. I also did a total format of the hard drive. But I will also try another hard drive. Any other suggestiona?
I think we have all pointed toward some sort of physical (hardware) problem. The only software problem I can think it would be is that there is a scratch or muck on the CD that has installed a corrupt file.
Maybe not drivers, but a clash of shared resources. See if removing the modem changes the result.
I have seen a few graphics drivers that detail installation before installing Win 2K. Check the installation instructions (also the FAQs) of the graphics drivers at the graphics card manufacturer's website.
Harddrive, maybe, check with the drive manufacturer's utilities. If the drive has been removed and put back, it may need to have "Identify Hard Drive" run in the BIOS settings (if the settings have that menu).
I believe that you are right. I am starting to get indications that the problem may be in the on motherboard video. I am going to go into the bios and try to turn that off then install a known good video board and see if that helps. Will keep all advised.
The problem seems to be the onboard Intel 815 Video Adapter. It will aloow the computer to start in w98 safe mode but will not allow it to start in w2k safe mode. I was ready to install the driver but can not figure out how to do it since I can not get it into w2K to install the driver. Recommendations?
Summary:
I am trying to upgrade an acer veriton 3200 to w2k. The problem seems to be in the on motherboard i815 video adapter. The system seems to need a driver, which I downloaded from the acer site, but the system locks up before I can install the driver. It also locks up trying to enter safe mode. In w98 I can get it to come up in safe mode but the driver will not install in 98 it requires w2k.
I even tried installing another video card but the system locked up the same as without it. Apparently the system looks for this driver before looking for another card.
Recomendations please on how to get around this?
Well a new wrinkle. Went in and the bios has a setting thatis either auto or on. Auto is supposed to allow it to see the pci card and use it. We put in the new card and it still failed. I then went a real circuitous route to install the driver for the on board video. At the end of the install the software said it could not find the hardware. I am pretty sure this tells me that the chip has a problem. Not sure at thsi point what the next logical step is?
