Angry w2k pro restart

w2k Pro has trouble restarting. Have to hit F8 and choose last known good configuation-profile1 6-7 times before it will start. Am running HP pavilion 1.6,512 Ram. There is a blue screen that pops up but it flashes by to quick to see the error message. Takes 10-15 minutes to restart. Have to leave system in standby.

A mountain of possibles.

Maybe Hardware, maybe software? Suggest first you grab your installation disc, bung it in the drive and from start/run type sfc /scannow this will check for missing, corrupted or overwritten (often incorrectly) system files.

If this doesn't help I would check the internals. Reseat cables, memory, graphics card and the CPU.

Does the problem happen when system is first turned on, or after it's been on for some time?
Check for dust on the CPU fan and heatsink and on/around any other Mobo fans including the powersupply vents.

After this (or before if you like) update your Motherboard drivers and graphics drivers. Are you running the SP4 update?

To force the system to stop on a blue screen so you can read the contents (and what really should have been the default setting) you need to turn off the automatic restart on crash setting.

In XP right-click My Computer then click properties, settings button and uncheck Automatically Restart ....

Note - this may be a thing that 2K does with different screens and I don't have 2K available to look at right now so here are a couple of pictures to help you track it down:

My System

Hi Newt...

The "Startup and Recovery" option window is the same in my Win2000 SP3 box...

1) Right-click "My Computer"
2) Select "Advanced" tab
3) In "Startup and Recovery" section click "Settings" button
4) Under "System Failure" section deselect/uncheck "Automatically reboot"

w2k pro restart

Newt,
made the setting changes you suggested and on the blue screen got the following message on start up:
STOP: c0000218 {Rigistry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\system32\config\software or it log or alternate.. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

What's the next step and can I get back to the settings so I can recheck instant restart so that I can work on an Internet problem I have with this same computer as I have installed the LSP-FIX you suggested.

Thanks ever so much for your help and time.
DJ Lou M.
