picture placed in my start up sequence that I want to delete
I have 2000 professional on my machine. When I start up my computer, after the sign-in window and during the "loading your preferences message," a picture appears that takes up my total screen and stays there until my desktop appears just before the start up sequence is completed. I can not find a way into the listing of start up steps that the computer is gong through. The picture is not in the start up menu, only Windows and Precision Time show up in Start Up. How do I find this picture and get rid of it. I do not know the title of the file that the picture is in. The picture was put on uninvited by a relative who says he now forgets how to find it or the name he used for the file. This was done some time ago and I am just getting frustrated that it is there unbidden. Thank you Stuckman

I have no trouble changing the wallpaper, the picture is not in Wall paper list. It appears prior to the wall paper that sits behind my desktop. Thanks for trying
I realize I may not have worded my response well. Sorry about that.
I've infact, run into this problem a few times...and for some odd reason...it just works. It would be worth the try, wouldn't it?
I have not yet figured out the board, this is my first time on. I have tied to recycle four times and that does not push the picture out of the start up
process. Thanks for the suggestion. I can not find the file for the picture
any where but I do not know the file name. I will try to find the reply
button on the board. Stuck Man
Hi again! Scroll to the bottom of this page....look down on the bottom right, and simply click on the "post reply" button.
So sorry it didn't help. Have you tried markp62 's suggestion?
Hello Daizy,
Thank you for the direction on reply. I have also tried Markp62's suggestion of getting a Hijack This printout of the "startuplist.text". I do not find any picture in the list. I do however find a section of "Screensaver key from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI" and it indicates the following "Shell=*section not found*''
"SCRNSAVE.EXE=*INI section not found''
''drivers=*INI section not found"
Similarly below the above entry is another
"Shell and screensaver key saverkey from Registry:
Shell=Explorer.exe
SCRNSAVE.EXE=*Registry value not found
drivers=*Registry value not found*
Policies Shell Key:
HKCM\..\Policies: Shell=*Registry value not found
HKLM\..\Policies: Shell=*Registry value not found''
As a beginner at this I have no idea what all that means but it seems to indicate that sections relating to the screensavers are missing from my start up. I do not use a acreen saver, I do have a picture as wallpaper, I think, background to my desktop. Any suggestions? Stuckman
Yes, I have changed the wall paper, I have cycled through a number of pictures that are in my wall paper list - the picture behind my desktop. I have restarted my computer each time. I have returned to the original picture as wall paper behind the desktop. The picture that I do not want fills the screen when the computer is shutting down and during start up. Otherwise it is not visible. I so not have a screen saver that comes if I leave the computer on unattended. Thank you for trying to follow me and fix this thing. Stuckman
Sorry for the typo. I do not have a screensaver. Do have wallpaper which I believe refers to the picture behind my desktop. I have changed this includning rebooting the machine 4+ times now. No change in the unwanted picture. Stuckman
I am still open to, asking for any other suggestions on how to remove a picture that is stuck in startup sequence. Cannot find any jpg file in startup with Hijack This program. The last two entries in this Thread refer to a splash screen, do not know what that is and the replacing something with the 2000 disc. I am sorry but I do not understand these messages. Do they refer to my question? Stuckman confused.
Turn off "show web content" on the Web tab of Display Properties, click "Apply". Go to the Background tab. It'll show the wallpaper you mentioned previously selected. Select "None" and click "Apply". Back to the Web tab, and re-enable web content, click "Apply". Back to the Background tab once again (Phew!), and select your desired wallpaper (or None, if you're a boring computer junkie like me), click "OK" and offending pic is gone on next reboot or logon/off.
Naughty people sometimes play a trick on a work colleague by enabling an explicit **** pic as non-web wallpaper in this way, so it shows up for a second on bootup and shutdown (or logon/off). Not me of course - wouldn't DREAM of it.....
Rambler,
Thank you very much and thanks to others who offerred suggestions. When I clicked on the web tab of the display the picture was listed though I did not see it there. It clearly was purposefully placed there and was not stuck as I thought. It wasn't **** just a picture my wife did not like. We are going to plan our revenge but it will be minor but hopefully a persistent low level annoyance to the perpetrator. I do not yet know what that will be. Thanks very much to all who helped me.
In my previous post, I suggested replacing Logo.Sys and Logow.Sys. Those are in reality renamed BMP files. Open those files with Ifranview, and you will see what I mean.
