Weird problem opening HTML files

I don't know whether this properly belongs here, or in Windows 2000 (my O/S) - please move it if necessary.

I think I somehow messed up the file associations for HTML files. I don't even know what I did, but after I made some changes to this and that, I started getting error messages when I tried to open any local HTML documents in Netscape 4.8. What's even stranger is that another computer, which is on a LAN with mine, now gets error messages also when trying to read the files on my computer - and they're different errors! Furthermore, there are other errors opening the files with IE.

When I try to view any HTML file (extension .htm) in NS 4.8 on my own machine, the error message says "Could not find {program path and filename} or one of its components..." - but the file opens just fine anyway. When my husband tries to view the same file (shared, of course) in Netscape 4.6 (don't ask), he gets "Unable to open specified file", and it won't open. On my computer, IE usually just opens the file, while on my husband's computer, it says "The file cannot be displayed."

I tried to restore some order by resetting default file associations. This didn't fix the problem at all, but now when I click on a .htm file, it opens with IE, not Netscape, and I would much rather have it default to Netscape. But now I'm afraid to mess with any more of the settings without knowing what I'm doing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My System

Hi acelightning,

What do your registered file types show for HTML Documents?

Since you're having the problem with IE also, I think this is a Windows problem, not Netscape. I'm going to boot this over to the W2K Forum.

Good luck!

Ramona

Thanks for moving it, Ramona - I wasn't quite sure where it belonged.

Since I tried restoring everything, all .htm and .html files are registered to open with IE. Changing that to Netscape didn't fix anything, so I set everything back to default again.

I forgot to mention that, if I ftp one of the offending file] to a web host, and then attempt to view it with either browser, it works fine. It's just on my machine, and/or my house LAN.

Check your event logs. There should be more detail there about exactly what is going wrong. If you find events you want to post, open the event, click the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy to the clipboard) and post it/them.

If you have SP4, the following is safe and harmless. If not, you want to load SP4.

start~run~sfc /scannow

Click for details about SP4 and sfc.

Newt, I have no idea what you're talking about. How do I know if I have SP4? I don't even know whether I have sfc, whatever that is. And what does all this have to do with spurious Netscape error messages?
