Mission Statement

I recently made a few updates for w2k and since today my pc often reboots without any comment or blue screen. This is especially the case when I want to print a file (GDI-Printer: Minolta-QMS PagePro 1100L) or when I start Wordpad (happened with OpenOffice.org too).

OK, I found the reason for this issue here and here.
These are discussions about the recently released Service Pack 4.
I suggest you all: don't install SP-4, because a couple of persons had to make a fresh w2k install after this! Wait for a patched SP-4 version (like SP-4a).

If you made the mistake to install SP-4 and cannot print anymore on the Minolta-QMS PagePro/PageWorks 1100L, rescue is near: a patched printer driver has been released. I know, it's not on the official web site, but that seems only to be a matter of time until it's up there too. Please uninstall the previous version completely before installing the new one. http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/...s21/22949.html
As a frustrated manager of a small business where I have to keep 7 people working with Win2Kpro, I try to find the broadest solutions to general proactive maintenance. One thing we have adopted is getting and installing all Critical Updates from Windows as soon as available.
I know this does not solve all problems, and does create some, but in the big picture, I think it works for us.
Each time a machine gets so deeply buried in problems that it needs reformatting, I reinstall Windows2K, then put in SP4 which I downloaded and store on a CD, then I go to the windowsupdate website for getting all the remaining critical updates.
Bottom line: We all run SP4 without a problem.

The vast majority of users have no problems with SP installs. It's probably worth waiting a few weeks before installing a major SP, incase of any major issues that MS can or need to fix. (must say I don't even listen to my own advice ) But the advantages of a SP far outway the fraction of a percent of people like Pythagoras1 who encounter problems.
There are always going to be SOME problems with different OS's and platforms. That's computers!
