Why would Windows 10 be asking for product key?

I've tried installing Windows 10 from outside and within Windows 7 Ultimate and 8/8.1 Pro, and always getting the same result..

I thought it may have something to with the video card, so I remove it, but I still get the box?

    Any idea's..

I've tried everything on that page... and still get asked for the key... Although I never see the "skip" button... I'm never given that option..

Is this machine set up to dual boot. You could try using the original OS that was installed on the computer. MS checks the machine for a valid product key.

Hi Alpha_and_Omega, What Media are you using? DVD or USB?
I have used the Windows MCT with DVD burned from the ISO download on 2 comps which went flawlessly. I was not asked for any Product Key during these installs as they were upgrading from W8.1 current OS's. This W10 Upgrade Help may be worth checking through.

    Neil.

I tried both... I tried using the upgrade option first using MCT and when that didn't work I burned the iso to dvd.

I tried to install the upgrade in both Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 8.1. Both ended with the same result.

Yep. Microsoft's servers must be able to verify that your previous Windows Product Key is legitimate in order to register your free upgrade entitlement to Windows 10. If that fails, it stops and prompts for a new valid Windows 10 Product Key.

If you read my post #5. I've already stated that. MS checks the machine for a valid Product Key. I wonder if the thread starter is actually dual booting or swapping drives. One with win 7 two with win 10. It would be nice to know what type computer being used. Laptop or a Desktop and the hardware configuration. I doubt it's the machine that's listed in the System Specs.

I never tried a clean install... simply because I already knew it would not work..

I tried the upgrade using MCT, in both Windows 7 and 8.1... I did burn the iso to dvd to see if it would give me the option to upgrade and it didn't...

I tried the upgrade this way:

1st attempt (inside Win7) - Used MCT and clicked to install as an upgrade -> No Luck
2nd attempt (inside Win8.1) - Used MCT and clicked to install as an upgrade -> No Luck

Then I burned the iso to dvd.

Then inside Win7 I attempted the upgrade using the DVD -> No Luck

Then inside Win8.1 I attempted the upgrade using the DVD -> No Luck

And then the last try was from booting from the DVD to try the upgrade that way, and again, No Luck...

During every attempt I was asked for the product key

I did read the ENTIRE link THROUGHLY and it was of know help.... But I do, as always intend to keep the link in the event someone else you use that info..

All my Product keys ARE 100% legitimate.. All my Microsoft software comes from Microsoft..

To do an upgrade to W10 you must only have 1 HDD operating. I would suggest you disconnect your 2nd. HDD while you try the upgrade.
If you have a third party AV program in operation - disable it until the upgrade is complete and all is working OK. Neil.

I will try what you are suggesting here... I'll disconnect 1 hard drive (the drive with Windows 8/8.1) I try upgrading using Windows 7..

SpywareDr, thanks for the link, I will be reading it over in a few minutes...

I do think I found the problem, atleast I hope.

About a year ago I changed my video card from a NVidia GeoForce 7300se/7200GS to a GeForce 210.

When I ran the test to see if the system is compatible, for some reason it's detecting my old video card (which I know is not compatible) and not the new video card which is compatible...

The drivers for the old card have been removed or so I thought... but something must have been left behind.... What could I have missed and how can I get the compatibility program to rescan.... Everything I've tried keeps detecting the old card...

Try ADW Cleaner or CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller to get rid of your old drivers. Neil.

I've already ran ccleaner and revo.. nothing was found. I'm considering just reinstalling Windows 8 and then try upgrading from there.
