Windows 10 - Sound File ALERT. Update from MS

Received the following from an RPS AV Group member the other day - posted FYI ....

Sound Devices Technical Alert

We have confirmed user reports of a serious issue with Windows 10 and
removable media formatted as FAT32. Users are experiencing corruption of
.wav media files by simply inserting FAT32 formatted SD or CF cards into a
Windows 10 computer. Files do not need to be opened or accessed in order for
them to become corrupt.

We wish to emphasize that this problem exists with .wav files regardless of
whether they were recorded on Sound Devices equipment or not. We strongly
recommend not using Windows 10 with your Sound Devices created audio files.

This problem has been reported to Microsoft who will have to issue any fix,
update, or further information on the behavior of Windows 10.

Thank you Pete,
I have received my message from MS today that I can now download and install full version of Windows 10 for free.
Do you know how long I can wait before I have to install it.
I certainly don't want to install it as yet far to many problems still.

Bill, Read this:

You’ll receive your notification to upgrade once we can confirm your device is ready to upgrade. We look at the specific compatibility for your device and overall demand for Windows 10 when deciding if a device is ready to upgrade.

Before we notify you, we’ll download the installation files needed in the background. Then, you will receive a notification on your desktop letting you know that you can upgrade right away or schedule a time that works best for you. We’re rolling things out in phases to manage the high demand, particularly in the first weeks following Windows 10 availability.

My take on this is that you may already have the install files on your comp? Neil.

Thanks Pete and Neil,
I actually did get a couple of notifications from MS, telling me that I can upgrade, I had a look in Updates, but there is nothing there that mentions win10.
But I would not do it yet anyway I think I wait 6 month for MS to fix the problems.For example, my music library contains over 1000 CD's and many are are in WAVE format.

Pete do you know if anything has been updated in regards to having your WAV files corrupted in win 10.
I don't think I can postpone the update much longer.

Received an update this morning from the original source quoting the reply from Microsoft ....

"Technical update on the Sound Devices / Windows 10 memory card issue:

Working with Sound Devices and key members of the audio and video production community (thanks!) we’ve identified the cause of the SD/CF card corruption.

In Windows 10, we introduced the EFS (Encrypting File System) for FAT32 media. To identify a file as encrypted, we use one of our bits in a Microsoft-use byte in the file entry. This file entry exists for each file on the card. For non-encrypted files, this bit should be set to zero. This bit was incorrectly set to one by the Sound Devices recorders. Because we did not use this bit in that byte prior to Windows 10, Sound Devices’ testing would not necessarily have revealed any issues.

When Windows 10 would mount the card, it would read the bit, and treat the individual files as encrypted. Depending upon what accessed the files, the result of this could be as simple as the inability to copy the file, or actual file corruption as the encryption header overwrote the RIFF WAV header.

Sound Devices has the information now to update their future firmware if desired. Because we don’t want anyone to lose data, we’re implementing an additional check in Windows 10 to confirm a file is encrypted before modifying the header, which will ensure we don’t corrupt these files going forward. (If the bit is set and we cannot confirm the file is actually an EFS file, we’ll simply treat it normally.) We’ll have more information on this very soon. We're working to make the patch available as quickly as possible.

We have not identified any other sources of incorrect file system entries at this time. There was speculation about certain brands of card readers, or upgrade vs fresh installs of Windows 10, or any wav files written from Windows 10, but none of that turned out to be related to the issue. If you do know of other sources of file corruption and can provide me with specific details with repeatable scenario, we’ll look into it for sure.

External Hard Drives are pretty cheap. With that said all that music should be backed up somewhere. I seem to go thru a laptop every 3 to 4 years. I had a HD failure warning couple weeks ago. Hopefully I will get more life from it since its only 2 years old.

It all comes down to the preparation advice given by MS. They strongly advise backing up/cloning/imaging/copying (whatever you like to call it) BEFORE proceeding with the W10 Upgrade.
As I understand it - your OS.old is the available revertion for the 30 days 'trial' period. MS states that no changes will be made to that data/files until the 30 days has elapsed.
I stand to be corrected if my interpretation is wrong.
MasterChief, if you have had a warning of HDD failure - why not clone to an SSD before the brown stuff flies and enjoy a quicker response that the SSD will give you. Neil.
