Dad bought himself a HP x64 laptop for Christmas. For the last two months Dad and I have been trying everything we could find to get Win 10 installed. Every time we try, everything does ok until the last. When installing it jumps to 4% at start then about a minute or so it jumps to 85%. After another minute it reboots back to 8.1. Then a pop up asking when would he like to install Win 10. We choose now and a repeat of above begins. Next try we set a date and time for Win 10 to install. Next morning 8.1.

I've searched Google repeatedly only to find others have the same problem but as of yet no solution.

I've installed ALL updates from win update even the optional ones.

    Virus scanned with two scanners.

    Turned off/uninstalled all virus/malware scanners.

Microsoft says his computer is ready for Win 10 so....

Has anyone found/heard of a fix for this?

Hi DugE. Are you installing Windows 10 using the Windows Update method or did you download the Windows 10 ISO separately from the Microsoft website?

From the Update method. It'll only let me download via the desktop.

Download Windows 10 and see if that method will allow you to install Windows 10 successfully.

Windows installation has failed! No error code or any reason why installation failed.

I downloaded to desktop before running the tool. I did a virus scan and turned anti virus off.

Everything went well prior to installation.

Alright then. Are you ok with performing a clean install of Windows 10? If so then follow the instructions in this link, How to Clean Install Windows 10.

I'm a little concerned about doing a clean install. Won't that cause havoc with a OEM?
Also, is using the win 10 iso similiar to a clean install?

No it won't cause any problems as long as you have the proper drivers available for Windows 10. You can also boot from your Windows 10 USB drive/DVD and click on the Upgrade option instead of clicking on Custom which will keep your files and settings instead of wiping your drive so you can try that method if a clean install concerns you.

You could try this, as I had problems with W7 pro, may work for you on W8.

Have a death in the family so I'll try this weekend. What I'm going to do is a refresh/restore before trying the complete install. Dad likes to explore and I think he may have deleted something he shouldn't have. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I used the media creation tool and made a usb to install on another computer. It wouldn't load on startup so I ran setup. But I got : The file 'autorun.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup cannot continue. Error code is [0x7E].

I run chkdsk and sfc/scannow and then rerun win10 setup again. It started and installation was good til it failed at 91%. No error code was given just "installation failed. "

What's the exact model of laptop your Dad bought?
Might help in tracking down your problems

Did you perform a clean install of Windows 10 or an upgrade installation?

I used the media creation tool twice. Is that an upgrade or clean install? I'm willing to do a clean install now.

Well did you keep your personal files and settings or did you remove all personal data when upgrading to Windows 10?
