Windows 7 is on my drive C. If I install Linux onto drive D, which one will be loaded when the computer starts, Windows or Linux?

I think there is a boot loader that will allow you to choose.

If the D drive is a second drive - the BIOS determines which one boots first.

Both drive C and D are on the hard disk. Is the boot loader on the motherboard?

When you install any OS, it installs a small program called boot loader which load first & then loads the OS.

Windows boot loader cannot load any other OS except Windows whereas Linux bootloader can load almost any other OS. So its recommended to install Windows first & Linux thereafter as Linux bootloader overwrites the Windows boot loader but can still load both. (That's in simple terms).

While booting you can load whatever OS you want to load.

Can I change the settings in the Linux boot loader at will, so that it will automatically load Windows or Linux each time when the computer starts?

You can choose from the menu every time the computer boots. The default choice is Linux.

If I have to choose manually each time when the computer boots, it will be very inconvenient. Is there a convenient way? I will normally use Windows.
