    That's not a fix, that's a work-around. They are still working on a patch.

I must respectfully disagree with you. The work around will be the fix put into an HP Service Pack.
HP doesn't want customers playing around in the safe mode or changing the names of system32 files - so they bury these changes in a Service Pack.

NOTE: That second link ackerberg added (and Arie also linked) pertains to the "Compaq Presario S6300NX Desktop PC ".

While the patch may be a "general" patch indended for several HP/Compaq computer models, one should probably search HP's Support & Drivers section for their specific computer model number to be sure one applies the correct patch (if such a patch is necessary) before installing Service Pack 3.

Once the "Software & Driver downloads" page for a particular computer model is displayed, one will probably find the patch in the Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs section identified as "Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors. "

I might add that you can not find this kind of info on the HP websites unless you specify which desktop you are looking for, hence the S6300NX Desktop PC designation. However I am quite certain that this patch is for any Presario Desktop with an AMD processor, but I agree that you should check your model number to be certain.
