    Hi all,
I have a Vista Home Premium 64 bit machine with a router. Internet works fine on it. I have connected a cable to my older 98SE machine and all I get is this message:
"The following Error occurred while loading protocol number 0. Error 38: The computer name you specified is already in use on the network. To specify a different name double click the Network icon in Control Panel. "
Needless to say that I tried that but it did not change the message. I am totally ignorant as far as network connections are concerned and Windows 98SE does not help either.
Can anyone give me some advice please as to how I can get the 98SE machine connected? Thanks for your kind help.

What names are using for each computer?

To find this information enter the following in a command or cmd window:
    Code:
    ipconfig /all
The computer name will be displayed as "Host name ".

The host name of the Vista machine is AXEL
I cannot establish the name of the 98SE machine because when entering the ipconfig /all command I just see a split of a second flicker of a DOS window before it disappears. How can I make it stay to be able to read the information? Thanks for your help.
    Cheers Axel

Enter "cmd" in the run dialogue - that will open a command console. Then enter "ipconfig /all in the console window.

    Hi ReggieB,
I very much appreciate your kind help.
The host name of the 98SE machine is:Webtrader.Belkin
What I really want to achieve is to connect my 98SE machine to the internet, i.e. to the same ADSL2router/modem my Vista machine is connected to via a cable. I have connected a second cable from the router/modem to the Ethernet card of the 98SE machine and can't seem to get a connection.
    Cheers Axel

Are both the Vista and 98 PCs set to obtain IP addresses automatically? It's probably best that they are.

It's a long time since a played with a Window 98 system so my help with that will be general - I can't even remember the network windows and wizards!

Yes, they are. I have gone through all the wizards, but the network simply is not recognized. I am at the end of my wisdom!

Connecting to an ADSL modem/wireless router

I want to connect my 98SE machine to the internet, i.e. to the same ADSL2 modem/router my Vista machine is connected to. One cable goes from the modem to the Vista machine, a second cable goes from the modem to the Ethernet card of the 98SE machine. Whilst the connection to the Vista machine works perfectly well, I can't seem to get a connection to the 98SE machine. When the 98SE machine is turned on a light goes on at the modem and another light comes on at the Ethernet card at the rear of the computer. It appears that the computer does not see the Ethernet Card although I have installed it and it shows up at the Device Manager with no question mark or crossed out. TCP/IP is installed and obtaining an IP address is set to automatic. Firewall is turned off. No Virus is present.
What am I doing wrong and what do I have to do to make the connection work?
    Cheers Axel

    Axel,

Please don't dual post. I've merged your new thread with your original thread.

OK, this is now looking like a network card/driver problem. To confirm that, does the Vista PC connect to the internet OK if you connect it via the cable you've been using for the 98 PC?

What is the make and model of the network card?

    Dear ReggieB,
sorry for dual posting. I thought it might be a 98SE problem. The cables are both o.k. I have reinstalled the ethernet card on the 98 machine and ... bingo it works. Thanks very much for your kind help. I really appreciate you guys helping us out.
    Cheers Axel
