An Active-X installer, installed a program (VirusProtectPro) on my machine. When I unstalled the program, it left a blinking Icon in my system tray. It does not show up as a startup item in sysconfig or the startup folder. A search shows nothing remaining of the program. A search of the reqistry shows no referance to the program. It is not listed as a task to run. I contacted the company through there web site(no phone number listed) but have not received a reply. also system recovery does not help.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi, lcraft. :)

I expect this thread will be moved to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum as that seems to be a more appropriate forum for your issue.

I suggest you carefully follow all the the instructions in the following link and wait for expert guidance.

If you instead decide to proceed with removal on your own (which might not be successful, especially if your computer has been infected by a new infector), here's a BleepingComputer link.

Aww...c'mon! Our malware-removal experts can't be too busy, can they? :D

I'll keep that fact in mind whenever I find specific removal instructions at BleepingComputer.

I hope someone knows how to fix this.

I have exactly the same problem. Between AdAware, Spybot and Norton AV, I think I have removed the program, except for that annoying icon in the system tray.
There got to be someone who figured out where it hides.

Hi, clefrapper. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

I would still be inclined to carefully follow the removal instructions at BleepingComputer (even after having used Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton AV).
AFAIK, BleepingComputer.com is a reputable source of information/resources.

If carefully following those BleepingComputer instructions does not result in removing the icon (and probably other stray malicious files), then I would suggest you seek further one-to-one assistance from malware-removal experts by starting your own new thread in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum (since your infection status is likely different from the original thread starter's infection status). ;)

Please let is know whether the BleepingComputer instructions work for you or not.

VirusProtectPro Icon in the system tray

    Thank you Mailman:
I tried to follow the instructions at BleepingComputer, I even found the guilty dll file, zkpssqa.dll, but when I tried to rename it as instructed, it said that it couldn't be renamed because it is used by Windows. So the whole process kind of got stuck there.

    Any idea?

    I am using Windows 2000.

Hi lcraft and clefrapper .... just wanted to check in on the both of you.

    lcraft,
Are you still in need of assistance? If so, please create and post a HijackThis log, along with details of what you have done to this point.

    clefrapper,
I would ask the same of you, but please create a new topic of your own. Thanks! :)
