    Hi,

I need to know which of my security programs will work on new Vista laptop.

For Spyware, I have SpyBot, SpywareBlaster and AdAware. I was planning to try SuperAntispyware instead of AdAware 7.

For Virus protection, I could use Avast which I now have on my XP or AntiVir.

My only concern is the Firewall. My only experience is with Tiny Personal Firewall v. 2.11.15 and I do not know if that would work in Vista.

Do CCleaner 1.37.456 and HiJackThis (2006) version work on Vista?

I know and trust these programs and would love to continue using them with Vista.

Any additional software that I should consider? Any input will be so much appreciated.

    Vista Firewall

The built-in Vista Firewall is good, but a NAT router would be better.

    Hi Pete,

Some good news, some bad news, especially with the firewall. I am using Tiny on my XP. Is that OK? I have never used anything else. any suggestions for easy to use and good protection both in and out?

Also, I have heard negative comments about TrendMicro HijackThis. Care to comment?

    TIA.

    Hi tuktatim,

I am so new to Vista and laptops, I don't know what a NAT router is?
As far as I know Vista firewall only protects you from something coming in and not going out from your computer. Is this correct?

Any suggestions as regards easy to use and good firewalls?

    Thanks.

No :), but it is now out of beta and our trained analysts seem happy enough with it.
If you have had no problems, stick with it. I have no experience, nor heard much about it.

Comodo (free) is highly rated and is the firewall I use on XP in conjunction with NOD32, plus all the others you mentioned.

    Pete,

Thanks for your input. I will check out the comodo site and look for Hijackthis. I can't imagine running a computer without HijackThis. Oops, I just remembered one more thing I can't be without on my computer. ERDNT. Do you have any knowledge if it will work on Vista? Trying to find the download site, but I no longer have a bookmark for it. :(

    NAT and Vista Firewall

    NAT = Network Address Translation
The router will mask your private ip address and only show the IP address your ISP gave you. Incoming traffic needs permission to come in any ports by way of your ACK packets. The Vista firewall does monitor both inbound and outbound traffic.

You completely lost me regarding the NAT. Sorry  Is this the same router that I need to have laptop and desktop both use DSL?

that is good news about Vista firewall. But I wonder, if it will allow MS to go in and out at will on my machine.

Pete, thanks so much for the link and the good news. If I ask one more question, I hope you won't throw something at me. :D

I use a CD that has Ghost on it and it works to do my images from Dos. Can this be used on Vista too, as far as you know?

if you have an AOL screen name (you can get one free on AOL.com) you can download their free full version of McAfee which works on Vista and its firewall works very well along with their anti-vrus and other stuff on there too.

comodo is an excellent firewall i use it on my xp machine. comodo also has free antivirus, spam sft and spyware program. havent tested them yet but if they are as good as the firewall i will be using them as well. currently using antivir and it seems to do a great job.

a lot of companies seem to be very slow in getting sft of vista. its almost like they think m.s. is going to change their minds about vista and pull it. where have some of these companies been all the time m.s. has been talking about vista.

but thanks i wasnt aware comodo doesnt have one for vista. sure works nicely on xp though.
