    My desktop OS is XP SP2 and is installed with Windows Defender and Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007. Microsoft updates are downloaded and automatic installed.

    Windows prompts me that "Some Updates could not be Installed ", and they include:

    Security Update Office 2003 (KB920813)
    Security Update Office 2003 (KB925251)
    Security Update Office 2003 (B934180)
    Security Update Outlook 2003 (KB924085)
    Security Update Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB936557)
    Security Update Excel 2003 (KB936507)
    Security Update Word 2003 (KB934181)
    Security Update PowerPoint 2003 (KB933669)

    Any clue?

    Hi, IvanH. :)

    I'm going to offer the following suggestion before Arie does. :p

    ==========
    Find error codes associated with the failing updates (KBxxxxxx) in the WindowsUpdate.log.

    To open this log, go to Start > Run and type or paste

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post error codes here.
    ==========

    BTW, since all your failed updates are related to MS Office 2003, perhaps you have a missing/corrupted Office install or your "Office Genuine Advantage" (OGA) needs to be updated/fixed.

    EDIT: Since you're experienced, you might be able to wade through the following document to make some sense of your windowsupdate.log (and KBxxxxxx.log files that might also be in your Windows folder).

    Hi Mailman:

    I did as your advice:

    Find error codes associated with the failing updates (KBxxxxxx) in the WindowsUpdate.log.

    To open this log, go to Start > Run and type or paste

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post error codes here. [Ivanh: Error codes: 0x8024200b and 0x80070643.]
    ==========

    BTW, since all your failed updates are related to MS Office 2003, perhaps you have a missing/corrupted Office install or your "Office Genuine Advantage" (OGA) needs to be updated/fixed. [Ivanh: all passed successfully]

    EDIT: Since you're experienced, you might be able to wade through the following document to make some sense of your windowsupdate.log (and KBxxxxxx.log files that might also be in your Windows folder). [ivanh: only successfully installed updates will have KBxxxxxx logs. So, none of the failed to installed updates has a log in the %windows% folder.]

    [/QUOTE] [Ivanh: not a single clue from it.]

    BTW, let me know if the latest WindowsUpdate.log is of any help to you to help me. I can post it here or send it to you via email.

    I'm not familiar with using the windowsupdate.log for debugging so sending the log to me probably wouldn't help much. ;)

    Microsoft Knowledge Base Searches:
    Some of those even refer to Office 2003 so you might strike gold. :) If one of the suggested solutions works, please let us know so others may benefit.

    Here is the solution and the process to get it right!

    From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903772/en-us, three methods are suggested.

    I've tried Method 1 and it's not helpful, because the Startup Type of Ose.exe is already Manual.
    I dont' believe in Method 2 but still replaced the Ose.exe. Nothing better.
    I am hesitate to use Method 3, which suggest me to remove the existing one and re-install the whole Microsoft Office 2003! Then I need to spend hours to activiate the product and tune up the settings again! (perhaps it's the last resort...)

    From http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884298, it gives another clue about the product code GUID of my Office 2003 product. It suggests that the Windows Registry may be damaged. It suggests that the path of the original installation sorce in the registry is missing. What I found is that the Path for the download source, which was G:\ and now should be E:\ for the CD-ROM Drive because the second harddisk was removed. (and G:\ no longer exist!)

    After I edited the Windows Registry and adding back the right path, the updates can be installed SUCCESSFULLY!

    (Does it imply that Windows XP is NOT Plug-and-Play!?) I removed a second harddisk, and Windows XP refused to update my Office Professional 2003!

    It spent me a few days for a total of 20 solid hours on it! Just because Microsoft Update Installer failed to check and correct the Windows Registry.

    Hi Mailman, thanks for helping and inspiring me all the way to the solution!

    For others having the same problem, may refer to http://suport.microsoft.com/?id=884298 for details.

    Great detective work! :) Thanks for following up with your fix!

    I bet Method 3 in the other article would have fixed your registry path too. :p

    BTW, since you typo'd your solution link (misspelled support), here is the correct link.

    Depends on whether you consider that 20 hours "play" or "work ". ;)

    The exact same this happened to me after doing a repair reinstall to XP sp2and I resolved it today ( just responded to someone else on this site with the problem). I went to microsoft support and amazingly got an email response (I'd heard support was difficult to obtain). The guys email response was as follows (suggestion 2 worked for me--good luck):

    After checking the Windows Update log which was uploaded automatically when submitting the case, I noticed that the error code 0x80004002 was encountered.

    This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

    1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
    2. The Windows Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.
    3. The Windows Installer 3.1 is corrupted.

    We can perform the following steps to get the issue resolved. After trying each suggestion, please go to the Windows Update site to check the issue. Thanks for your cooperation.

    NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again when completing the update process.

    Suggestion 1: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
    ===========================================
    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

    If the issue still persists, please move on to suggestion 2.

    Suggestion 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
    ======================================
    1. Please download the file from the following link:
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

    2. Save the file to C: drive.
    3. Click Start->Run, type: "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine.

    There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce "

    Note: If you are using Windows Vista, please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be launched directly from the C: root directory.

    If it still does not work, please proceed to suggestion 3 to reinstall Windows Installer 3.1.

    Suggestion 3: Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1
    ==================================
    1. Press Start and choose Run.
    2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.
    3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:
    MSIexec /unregister

    4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:
    MSIexec /regserver

    After finishing the above steps, please check the result again. If the issue persists, please click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed. If it has, please highlight and remove it. After that, please reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.

    Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

    You might mean "XP service pack 2" not Office 2003. The service packs I believe apply to the OS (and I only have Office 2000). If I read the initial message correctly I believe it indicated that the trouble occured after reinstalling XP with SP2...no?

    Security Update Office 2003 (KB920813)
    Security Update Office 2003 (KB925251)
    Security Update Office 2003 (B934180)
    Security Update Outlook 2003 (KB924085)
    Security Update Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB936557)
    Security Update Excel 2003 (KB936507)
    Security Update Word 2003 (KB934181)
    Security Update PowerPoint 2003 (KB933669)

    Nope, according to the above those are Office 2003 updates, but since you state you have Office 2000 you need to install Service Pack 3 for Office 2000 before any updates for your version of Office will install.

    I would install the service pack, then go to Microsoft Update for critical updates for Office.

    BTW, if you open any of your Office apps, do you get a Windows Installer working instead?

    All I know is that there are a number of people on this site who reinstalled XP with SP2 and then couldn't install anything from Windows Update afterwards. My original message outline 3 options for possible resolution sent to me by microsoft support and suggestion #2 resolved the issue (apparently an Installer issue) for me as well as several others who inquired about the problem of not being able to use windows update. good luck.

    Hi, keith4man. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

    Thanks for jumping in with your description of what worked for you.

    Let's hope someone with the same or similar problem runs across this thread. Could prove to be very helpful.
