Hello everybody I'm new to these forums so forgive me if I have posted in the wrong forums. I don't know my away around the technical aspects of a computer either so I guess I'm quite a "noob" :p

Well I have quite an old Laptop - the Acer Notebook and it was bought in 2001 I think :p. Anyways just recently since around the start of the year it has been playing up a lot. It happens randomly and it's really quite annoying, I'll give you a list of the things that happens.

    What Happens:

    • Drop-down menu's dissapear and I have to drag my mouse over it to view the items in the drop down box
    • When I'm on forums posts just dissapear, you can see who posted them however the post is just cut off
    • The top blue bar where it says Windows BBS Proved by Mozilla Firefox (not sure what its called) just goes blank, the start menu goes blank as well (the icon)
    • The same with drop-down boxes happens to start menu, I have to run my mouse over it to uncover the files
    • Sometimes the top bar completely dissapears
    • Different parts of windows that are minimized are still on the window I'm looking at.
    • I get the Blue Screen of death ^_^
    • The functioning on everything is very poor and I have to completely turn of my computer and reboot it to fix it.

    What I know:

    • AVG Anti-Virus picks up nothing except for this crude virus which is one which is my mistake and wont let me get rid of it. It was some random one which says "Your PC keeps track of everything you visit, download this to clean your computer ", me being silly downloaded it and I'm not sure if it's the problem. I have read some threads now and I think I remember it to be WinAntiVirus2007
    • System Restore doesn't work - it only allows me to restore to the month I'm on no further, so being July 2 I can only restore to July 1 =/
    • When I go to Managing my MY Computer and look at System I have about 200 ERROR's in there :(
    • I have a fair bit of space left so I'm sure thats not the problem
    • I have limewire with lots of content (Music & Videos) :p

As you can see my computer is in quite a state and literally impossible to use properly for half an hour - I am losing my mind with it and really need help! Currently I'm trying Disk Defragmentations and it's taking a LONG TIME I mean a REAL LONG TIME, its 25% after an hour haha. So what else can I do - all help is greatly appreciated, is it Internet Explorer or my computer as a whole.

Also another cheeky error which is occurring is that quite randomly I hit a key or a shortcut or something and then all my text gets muddled up. Well it's just Y & Z get swapped around, all my side symbols like :;[][',.,/!@#$%^&((_+ they all go wierd alt lettered codes and get all swapped around and weird. Anybody that can help me fix that problem as well is a legend ^_^.

    Thanks for your time!
    Harry :)

Harry - Welcome to the Board :)

My instinctive reaction to your list of problems is that a format and clean install (of XP? - essential to post your OS) is the best course of action. As the lappy is 6 years old there may be hardware problems too, such as the hard drive slowly dying.

I would advise you to back up any personal data to an external source as soon as possible.

However we can put some effort in in trying to sort this mess out, but how far we can go will depend on the results you post back to us :)

These comments of yours stand out with my comments appended .....
Read this thread and post a dump log - this does not need to be analysed on the computer in trouble so you can download and run the software on another computer, but remain connected to the Internet while debugging ...

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33471
Limewire is known to be infested with malware/spyware, etc and is best avoided like the plague.

Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location - and must be run on the computer to be analysed.

Open the folder in which you placed HJT and double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT - post the log here.

I am moving this thread to the Windows XP forum with title edit for the time being and may later move it to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

We will help you all we can, but my strong recommendation on reading your list of problems is reformat and clean install.

Reading through your post again while trying to précis it into a new title it occurred to me that most of the problems listed under 'What happens' is probably due to corrupted video drivers. I suggest you uninstall and reinstall them.

    Your comment
is not encouraging and suggests either a hard drive problem or a corrupted OS - which could be the result of a failing hard drive. At this stage I do not want details on those errors.

Yes - that's it, but it appears to be incomplete and there is a symbol problem. Were you connected to the Internet while debugging?

BTW that dump was made back in March - is that the latest you have?
What I can get out of that is that there may be a problem with ialmdev5.DLL which is part of the Intel Graphics driver. This reinforces my suggestion to reload the graphics (video) drivers.

One thing I saw in your HJT log was that you are running 2 Antivirus programs - AVG and Norton - is that correct?

Running two antivirus programs is most definitely not recommended because of likely conflicts between the two - I suggest you dump one.

    Thanks Pete

Where was the thread specified where I could reload my Graphics driver, I'm not sure what to do or if I missed where you said I could do it.

I don't run Norton Anti-virus, it's on my laptop but has no subscription and has not been running for around a year. AVG is all I use :)

You missed nothing - I only suggested that you reloaded the graphics drivers - post the model number of the laptop and I'll see if I can find them for you.

Norton AV is still running - I suggest you uninstall it. From your HJT log ....
