When I set Firefox to be the default in Windows XP Home SP2 and click a hyperlink the link opens both Firefox (correctly) and a small "about:blank" Internet Explorer window as well. The download Q810565 won't install, as I have SP2, and it seems to be for SP! only. Any solutions?

I think this thread is best placed in the Netscape & Mozilla forum and have moved it there.

    IE hyperlink problem solved

    Thanks Ramona

Follow this trail: Windows (not IE) Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - File types - Registered file type down near the bottom of the list to URL - Change - select Firefox from Open with - OK - OK - problem solved!

    Thanks again

    I wish!

Well, it worked when Firefox was already open, which was a step forward, but the IE7 "about:blank" window still opens when a hyperlink is clicked and Firefox is not already open.

    What to do next?

Start|Control Panel|Add/Remove. On the left side you find a few buttons. The bottom one is Set Access and Default. You should select "Custom ". I, generally, have no problem, with the exception of a few websites which are hard-coded to open IE. I ignore them.

You might also check IE's Internet Settings:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Properties
Click on the "Program" tab, and deselect:
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser "

However, Westside's suggestion should do the trick.

This is getting more frustrating. I've incorporated both Westside's and Ramona's suggestions, and the problem continues. What next?

Just a shot in the dark.....
In addition to Ramona's and Fulvio's suggestions......

    1. Set IE explorer as DEFAULT (control panel >internet options>make IE default.)
    2. Open FF. >Tools>Options>Main - System Defaults >check Now > Select FF as default..

Sometime you have to recycle the settings.

    Does this help.

    Sorry....

    I can't replicate your situation....

If I am in TB and Select a link - it opens MY default browser - FF or SM whichever is set per above instruction.....

I did all of these - Firefox still opens as the default browser, but IE also opens in a small "about:blank" window. Any more thoughts?

    Thanks

    Roel,

Does your ISP use IE as the default browser? With some ISP's, the only way to connect is by using our proprietary software, which includes IE. Could this be your problem?

I might have thought so Ramona, but I've been using Firefox without problems for years with the same ISP. The problem seems to have started when I installed IE7. I then un-installed it (I know that this is not completely possible) but the problem persisted; even after I subsequently re-installed IE7.

I don't understand why there should be any problem if Custom settings are selected. I have WinXP SP2, IE7, and Firefox2.0.0.4 as default.
As I said earlier, a few site still try to open in IE. I, just, close them, and ignore them. I assume that your problem is across the board, with all links.

I know, Westside, I don't understand it either. It does happen with all links.

    roelw,
Do you have any "IE " type extensions in FF (IETab - IEVIEW) ?
If so, try and disable them and see if problems still exist.

The IE View extention would open IE. And, being confined to Firefox, it would not show up elsewhere. That's why I use IE Tab, which does not do that.
