OK, I'm looking to get a 500-750GB external hard drive... anyone has any recommendations for me?

I would by the drive and enclosure seperatly.

These are pretty cool for multi swapping drives:

This USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA drive adapter implements a bridge between a USB port and one SATA, ATA or ATAPI based mass storage device port.

Not quite in your league (500-750GB) but my two Maxtor One Touch's have worked well for me (250/160 Gb).

Thanks for the replies. Building my own sounds appealing... but I'm looking for eSATA & USB 2. Found a nice enclosure but it has only eSATA.

Right now this Apricorn looks like a favorite.

    A new Western Digital offering

I have a Western Digital 500GB My Book Premium ES Edition drive and I'm pretty happy with it.

It has the standard USB attachment but it also has an External-SATA attachment which is capable of 3GB/sec transfers. I bought an Promise e-SATA card for one system that didn't have an e-SATA port. It flies!
