Removing login request

I am the only user at home on my computer. How can I get it to login directly to the desktop without waiting for my click on a user icon. I tried TweakUI and it removed the icon but didn't go further so I had to restore.

I thought there was a poster on this thread who said to remove login request do Start>Run> and type control userpasswords2

That removes the login request but up comes a screen that says "the system could not log you on." X that out and the system boots fine with my names as the only user. Clock on that and the desktop comesup fine.

How do I get rid of "the system could not log you on" screen?

 

I originally asked how to get rid of that need and when I used this method, my machine booted with a blank screen. I couldn't go further so I booted into Save Mode and used System Restore.

I still have to select my icon on booting.

 

What are you restoring?

What are you restoring if you boot in safe mode and use system restore? Something in the start menu is telling Windows to look for a log-in screen, then the aforementioned shutting off of users/passwords still has that screen there until I click on it. This is with XP Pro. I have XP Home on my laptop and it boots right to the desktop. Still puzzled.

 

You have probably installed .net framework 1.1 which installs a user account for some ASP support or something. Anyway, it's not needed for the normal user (unless you develop in .net with ASP). Just goto User Accounts in control panel and delete the .net/asp account and it will once again log itself in, assuming that there is only 1 account left other than Administrator and that account is not passworded.

 

Nope but I did download the MS instructions for removing the logon thru Regedit. That worked.

 

Still a problem "the system cannot log you on "

A month or so ago I posted a problem similar to tenbob's. I'm the only user of my computer. I want it to boot to the desktop. I got this response:
Start->Run and type: control userpasswords2
Remove the check mark in the "users Must" line,.

Now I get "The system cannot log you on." Just X'ing out of the screen brings up a users page with just my name on it. I click on that and then get the desktop. How can I get rid of the "system cannot log you on screen" and the users page altogether, so my computer will boot directly to the desktop?

If you don't get a satisfactaory reply, just RESTORE to an earlier time until you do.

 

Make sure you are clicked on the account that you want to login to before you uncheck the users must enter a username and password

Did you follow the link from PeteC in post #5 above? Just unchecking the box is not enough. You must also enter your password, twice. If that method does not work, try the regedit method from Pete's link.

 

download tweakui and under logon / autologon you find the solution

 

I used the method "control userpasswords2" and selected advanced.

THe system asked for the password twice, but I could not enter any since I do not have a password. I don't want the icon at all so I do not have to click on it to start.

I want it to come up on my desktop automatically

I was under the impression from your post above that the regedit method worked for you and your comp now goes straight to the desktop. Was that presumption wrong?

When there is no password set on the account and using the control userpasswords2 method, when prompted for the password and confirmation after unchecking the box "Users must enter ....', leave the password field blank and hit enter twice, then OK to exit. If that does not work, set a password on the account via the user accounts applet in the control panel, then enter it when prompted in control userpasswords2 or use the regedit method.
