Hey everyone. Please don't be mad at me for asking this again, but after doing a lot of reading up on the Core Duo, I'm ready to sell my 2-week old T43p (Pentium M) to get a T60 (Core Duo). Please allow me to ask TWO final questions before I go to splurge. :)

    1. As most of us, I would imagine, I run a virus scanner, always-on adware protection, anti-spyware apps and some other stuff in the background. Being that the major benefit of the Core Duo is multitasking and having two CPU's vs. one to simultaneously perform two tasks without slowing each other down, how much of a MAJOR effect on a Core Duo laptop would I be able to really feel and notice???

    2. I keep hearing about more cache (??) and some other benefits of the Core Duo? What are they and how will I notice any boost in system performance???

Thanks so much for your input!! I am ready to purchase!!!! :)

I'll answer your first question since I do have a new dual core laptop: yes you will notice a big difference :)

It takes me something like 3 minutes to image a 3+ GB size OS (XP MCE} on its own partition to an external drive. That BTW is being done from Vista (on a 2nd HD) - I set up a Dual Boot system.

The hardware guys should answer your 2nd question.

    Regards - Charles

Cool, thanks...I'm getting a T60 with SXGA+ now. Hopefully 15 ". UXGA and 15" is outrageously priced, and I don't want to spend that amount.

I'll have a dual-boot again, too. I haven't set it up on my T43p, because I didn't want to waste my time doing it as I didn't know if I was going to keep this....this...just a sec...POS...So now that I know I won't, T60...Core Duo all the way...LOL

    Thanks for your response! :)

The cache you heard about will be L2 cache. I think it could be described as a storage area while the CPU is processing data. A larger amount is beneficial, but it is expensive to incorperate into the processor. The difference between Intel Celerons and Pentiums was largely the difference in L2 cache.

The two cores will be beneficial for CPU based "work ". RAM intensive programs, graphics intensive programs and disk intensive programs may only benefit on the "processing" side.

    Hey Matt,

Thanks for the info. I am in the process of selling my T43p, although it hasn't given me the darn BSOD for a LONG time. LOL...See the other thre

So back to the Core Duo. Here's what I'd like to know. If I run multiple downloads at the same time as putting up ebay listings, would the Core Duo be beneficial?

Another example is if I was running a virus scan at the same time as browsing the Internet and emailing, would I benefit?

Thanks Matt and to all who'd like to share their knowledge with me. :)

EDIT: So my T43p has an ATI FireGL video card with 256MB of video RAM and I'm looking at a T60 with a Core Duo CPU at 1.83GHz. So I'll be losing in the video memory department as the T60's I'm looking at only have either 64MB or 128MB of video RAM. And I'll lose a bit of processing power at 1.83GHz with the Core Duo vs. my current Pentium M at 2.13GHz. How big a deal is the fact that I will lose at least 128MB of video RAM??? Thanks again everyone! :)
