I am trying to delete Adobe Reader 7.0.8. I have tried to load the new version and am not able to do this. I tried removing it using add- remove programs but obtain an error message.

How can I delete the entire program with using the control panel?

    Hello Jerry,

What's the error message? Usually the problem is that either the uninstaller not there for Add/Remove to use or parts of the software are missing or corrupt.
The general fix for this issue where software can't be entirely uninstalled is to re install then uninstall.

I'm moving your thread to the Other Software section - this is not a Security issue.

    Regards - Charles

The error message I receive is" Patch program could not be opened. Verify the patch program exists and that you can access it ".

I tried reinstalling the program as well as trying to upgrade to 8.0 but the message I receive is that older parts of the program cannot be removed

    Thank you

    Hi Jerry,

Googling on this, came up with this Registry fix: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1031948579

Before you do anything, create a manual System Restore point, that will back up the registry.

If you can't - follow the directions in the thread I linked to on backing up the registry.

    And I'll post it here:
Start > run > type regedit > ok - in the upper left in the tool bar > file menu > export and export it to a file name - name it reg backup. Double clicking on the reg backup file will restore it.

    Regards - Charles

I have not tried to fix a registry and may not have the computer experience to do so. Do any of the registry cleaners work well enough to do this? If not it may pay for me to hire someone rather that play around with the registry

    Hi Jerry,

Well, you can give RegSeeker a try and I have no idea if it'll flag this as problem, you might come up with problems labeled acrobat/adobe.

If not, it would be easier to search for the reg entry "Patches" with it rather than regedit.

This will be my last questions:
How do I search the registry for patches and if I see patches do I delete all of them.

Hi Jerry, you can ask as many questions as you want :D

Did you try RegSeeker looking for bad reg entries first? That really would be the place to start.

    Hi Jerry,

If cleaning the registry doesn't work, post back. I won't be able to respond the rest of the night, will be back tommorrow morning and we'll go thru the procedure.

Thanks for letting us know that you've put this on the back burner for now. Please notice that I have edited my previous post to add an additional link to a fix from Adobe.com. Remember to come back to this post and let us know what the final outcome is. As you know, we don't like to give up on a problem or leave a post unresolved if we can help it. :)

As a side note to Charlesvar:
Sorry again, for jumping into the middle of your response to post. As Jerry was showing a strong reluctance to treading into the registry, I was trying to find a specialized cleanup tool that would do this for him. This was the best I could do. Hope you don't mind.

It appears I fixed the problem. I ran the Reg Seekers and had it correct the registry problems. Frankly I am not sure if or how it helped but I was then able to delete the Adobe 7.0.8 by using Windows Installer Clean up. I then reinstalled the program ( it installed 7.0.9) and it now works perfectly.
Thank you for your help. This is a great web site and it has helped me solve many problems over the years.
