WMV files and Netscape 7.2 mail client

    I am using Netscape 7.2 and Windows XP.

    Recently I have been having a problem with some wmv files that are sent to me as attachments. In the past and 50% of the time now when I attempt to open the mini movie I get several error messages about various issues. When that happens I simply save the attachment to my Desktop and am able to open it with NO problem.

    This has occurred with Media Player Verson 10 and 11.

    Since this does not happen all the time I thought that perhaps someone could shed some light on this matter.

    What is the exact error you receive?

    I have neither version of MediaPlayer, however, when you double click the Attachment, and the below window opens, click on "Open it with" and browse to the location of the wmplayer.exe file, and select this file.

    Also enable "Always perform this action when handling files of this type ".

    Sorry I didn't get back with you. I apparently didn't get an email notification that you had responded. Guess I need to check that out.

    Anyway I don't really get an error message. Media Player opens but then it says something about an url. It never did that before.

    So I have just been saving it to my Desktop and then double clicking on it. Player opens and the mini clip plays just fine. I thought perhaps you knew a little trick for clearing this hassle up.

    But if you don't use Media Player and problably don't even use Netscape anymore either I guess I'm still stuck with this issue.

    Don't go away, what I meant is that I use a different Version of MPlayer (9). What I need is exactly what happens, the exact text re: URL, or anything else that MPlayer tells you. I do still have NS 7.2 installed in order to troubleshoot with users still running the browser.

    Well, hang on.

    I will try to see if I've not trashed the last email containing one of those files and make a note of exactly what the error was and will return.

    I have WMP11, but no Netscape. Yes, the url could help. And, also what about it. I, rarely, use WMP to open .wmv files, but I have had occasional difficulty with other WMP files. Invariably, the website was at fault. I check the site in Firefox, with and without the IE Tab extention. With IE Tab it is the same as with IE.

    Okay, I am going to try and explain this. It will require a lot of typing so bear with me in regard to typing errors.
    The WMV file comes as an attachment to an email message, I click as before and Media Player opens with this message:

    There is a problem with the URL or file you are trying to open or play. If you are trying to open an URL, the URL may not be valid. If you are trying to play a file, the file type is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the Player may still be able to play the file. However, you should only play files from a trustworthy source.

    If I click on Yes I then get the following message:



    Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:â€).

    At that time I have a choice of Close or Web Help. I tried the Web Help with no results.

    I used to NOT have this problem. Don’t know why it has started all of a sudden.

    Could it be a problem because the sender?

    It could be the sender. Do you have any mail from the past when it worked.
    I have run into the message which you listed once or twice, but never bothered to get a fix, because things worked perfectly most of the time. You have, already, gone past Netscape, so the problem is with WMP.

    Well, I have a work around by saving the attachment to my Desktop and I have no old messages to see what the difference might be.

    I tried the link you supplied Ramona but I can't handle those newgroups if they are like the ones I tried years ago. That was a big hassle in itself. I only have the brains to handle a board like this one.
