    Hello,

I'm using Outlook express 6 with a WINDOWS 2000 OS. My computer has been hijack by a virus. When I try to go into Outlook express I get an error message. DirectDBnotifyWndProc:msimn.exe-Application error. I can't open my e-mail, when I try to open my inbox the message reads "Outlook express did not shutdown correctly" and then it kicks me out. I also can't launch Internet explorer. I've tried Spybot, adware and other downloads but nothing works. Can some one out there please help. It would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome (back) to WindowsBBS Forums.

I would ask if that HJT log you presented was one made while in safe mode? If so, please create a new one in 'normal mode'. Also, please be sure you have no items in the 'ignore' list, as we need to see a complete list of everything that's running on your system, no matter how inconsequential you think it is.

    Also:
Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Open HJT, select the 'None of the above, just start the program' button, then click the 'Config' button, then select the 'Ignore list' button then hit the [Delete all] button, go back and run HJT.

Of course if you don't have any items set to ignore, it's a moot point. :p

    Hi jacked email

I put HJT in its own folder and have attached the logfile it created in normal mode. Do you want me to scan and then fix everything it finds or just show you the log?

    A little confused.

Now that's one lean machine, barely anything running, is it a fresh install? Rarely see machines with so little running.

That being said, I don't see any firewall or antivirus, which is a major no-no. I suggest you get both right away to help stem the wave of Net nasties.

You have one file that looks like it may have been delivered via email. So lets get a couple of online scans and delete what is present.

Then go to this page, Panda ActiveScan
    • Click the 'Scan your PC' button. ( You may have to disable any pop up blockers)
    • Then press the green [Check Now] button.
    • Enter your country and state along with a valid email address.
    • Allow the ActiveX install, it may be a few minutes for all components. (For XP SP 2 watch for the yellow bar at the top of IE)
    • Once installation is complete you will need to select a device to scan. Please select 'My Computer' and the scan will begin.
    • Once the scan is done, click the [See report] button, then the 'save report' button. Be sure to save the log file created in a place easy for you to find.

Then do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner icon.
Accept the Kaspersky agreement and the program will load.
You will then be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files. This will take a few minutes, even with hi-speed.
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next

Now click on [Scan Settings] button.
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
    Click OK

Now under the Please select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer

The program will begin the scanning process.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Then click on the [Save as Text] button
Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post for me to review.

Open Hijackthis, select the 'Do a system scan only' button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [userinit] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on your computer.
Press the <F8> key, as soon as you see the message: For troubleshooting and advanced startup options for Windows 2000, press F8.
The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
Safe Mode should be highlighted by default, if not, using the arrow keys, highlight it and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for then delete, if found, the following files/folders(some may not be present after previous steps):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe<<<--this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Shutdown, click Restart The Computer, and click Yes.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Antivir is also a good choice. I'd be willing to bet if I actually look a bit more there will be several others which are suitable. It really depends on how often you use email, how you surf and so forth

That file is still present, we need to remove it.

Download the Killbox from here and save it to the desktop.
    • Double-click the KillBox icon on your desktop to open it
    • Select "Delete on Reboot "
    • Then select "All files ".
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

    Return to Killbox
    • Go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".
    • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button.
    • Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Delete next Reboot prompt.

Reboot, post new HJT log file please.

Lil sucker is still there, lets look a bit deeper.

Open HJT, click the [None of the above, just start the program] button.
Then click the [Config ]button in the lower right hand of the program.
Then select the [Misc Tools ] button.
In the upper left hand side of the program tick the two boxes [List also minor sections (full)] button and the[List empty sections (complete)] button and select 'Yes' when prompted by the dialog box. The resultant scan will produce a notepad log file, please paste that log file back here for me to review.

    And:
    Please download SilentRunners from here

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
Then select 'Yes' to confirm the search.
When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile created back into this thread for me to see.
