   It's called the Systray.
   Each program has its own way of not being there. You can right click on some and select Options and Uncheck the option to show in the systray.
   
   Other programs you have to keep it from loading all together...
   
   You can also "hide" them from show by righ clicking on the taskbar and going into Properties.
