    Hey all,

I just downloaded Vista RC1 from MS's website twice. I am attempting to extract it using PowerISO, but it comes up with an error message about 1% into the extraction. What am I doing wrong? I really want to try Vista out again. Should I not use PowerISO? What do you guys recommend??

    Thanks to all. :)

Telling us what the error message says would be very useful. That is why they exist, after all.

Just burn the image - there should be an option in your burning software. In Nero 7 it is under Recorder > Burn Image.

I understand. This one just says "Extract failed! ". I am using PowerISO. Is that what everyone uses?

Also, I have no DVD burner. :( This should work on the hard drive, though. I've had much bigger files in .iso format, which didn't have any problems?

Thanks for your responses so far. I so want to try this baby out! :) Should I try to use a different extractor??? It's so frustrating as I see all the files in the .iso file with setup.exe and everything. Hmmm...

I don't think so. Even if you managed to get it extracted to the hard drive, all you'd end up with would be a bunch of cab files the same as on an XP CD. The image file isn't an image of an installed Vista OS. It needs to be installed as any other OS and I know of no way to run setup from the hard drive. I think you're out of luck if you don't have a dvd burner.

Did you try to verify the download with MD5 by any chance? You should do that as it would tell you if the download is good or not. Download MD5 and check the iso with it and then see if the hash it comes up with is the same as the one on the page where you downloaded Vista from.

    http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm

If for some reason you can't find it there, here's the hash it should come up with.

    32 Bit version
    MD5 hash: 22486e815a38feffd9667317dfeec55a

    64 Bit version
    MD5 hash: f3a385aae6e4dea9226e31d9f1148b56

To use MD5 you place it somewhere on your hard drive. It's easiest to just place it in the same folder as the iso file and and then open a command prompt, change to the folder that the two files are in and type the following:

    md5 vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x86fre_client-lr1cfre_en_dvd.iso

If you've renamed the file, use the name you gave it instead. Also, that file name is the 32 bit version. If you downloaded the 64 bit version you'd have to change the name accordingly.
It will grind away for a while and when it stops it'll come up with a hash that should match the hash I posted above. If it does, the download is good, if not, the download is bad.

If you don't put md5 in the same folder you have to change to the folder it's in and then type md5 followed by a space and the entire path the iso file.

Alright, MD5 noticed it as being bad. The message was Codes do not match. Anyway, I also tried it on .zip and .rar files and it ALWAYS said the same thing, s I don't know about this MD5. Am I doing something wrong????

As for the hard drive only thing, I've done a lot of full installations and upgrades that way. PowerISO did show me what was in the file. The most recent OS I installed that way was Vista Beta 2. Hmm...Should I download the 64-bit version??? What's the difference between 32 and 64 again. Sorry for a stupid question.

Thanks again...I so want to try this baby out! What should I do with the .iso fiule?????????? :(
