OK Bubba, the second site you mention gets flagged by SiteAdvisor as installing one of the many alleged anti-spy apps, WinAntiVirus. It's also in the IE-SPYADs databse as a known threat or associated with the people who push the product.

    SiteAdvisor Analysis

Typically you wind up with a Vundo infection.

But to clear up one thing, did you DL Defender & Adaware and then begin to get popups? Just curious, because if so, we'd like to know where you DLed them from, so we can have the security experts check it out.

Seeing as you have already run Adaware and have Defender, lets move onto Hijackthis!.

Please do as instructed below and I'm going to move this to the prooper forum.

    HiJackThis v:1.99.1zip.
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order.

Did you download Ad-ware or Ad-Aware SE - the latter is the one you want from Lavasoft.

Sorry, but I've deleted everything except Ad aware se. Funny thing about the whole mess was my copy of Limewire kept reopening, time after time. I still have safeguard and Spywareblaster installed. I'm getting ready to check for a Trogan. Everything has returned to normal since I dumped some of the programs. I still have Ad-Awarese installed. I even dumped Limewire.

OH, one of the culprits was this program called stopzilla, it may have done the popups.

I downloaded and ran the AVG anti virus program and found several viruses and cleaned them. Hopefully it will cure my problem.

    Hi

apart from running scan with AVG Anti Virus i would suggest to re-check it with another AV and Anti Spyware software as some of them might not detected ,as i have experienced that with a single AV / AS software can't remove / detect all virus / spy so keep more then one AV / AS as a precausion.

    Regards

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Please hit Hit 'Ctrl' + 'Alt' + 'Delete' to bring up running processes and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{44803596-05D6-1033-0803-040217040001}\Update.exe

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{44803596-05D6-1033-0803-040217040001}<<<<---this folder

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

    • Please go HERE to run the Trend Microâ„¢ HouseCall Scan.
    • Click Scan now. It's free!
    • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
    • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
    • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
    • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
    • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
    • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
    • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
    • Click the Clean now>> button.
    • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Then post a new HJT logfile.

OK, I've done all of the things mention and have one question and one problem. After going into the safe mode and eventually unchecking the hide protected operating system files, shouldn't it be re-checked after the scan. Also, after I downloaded Housecall scan and ran it, after it finished, it didn't show a summary page. What's up with that?

Well, something else seems to have popped up, there are two lines which were not there previously and are threats.

Can't say why the TM scan didn't take you to summary page.

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: Explorer - C:\WINDOWS\system32\l4p2le7o1h.dll (file missing)

Reboot, into 'Safe mode',and search for, then delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\l4p2le7o1h.dll<<<--this file

Reboot into Normal mode and post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

If there is a newly named file in that 020 spot, we will have to scan deeper.

I figured it out about the Housecall scan, it already has itself programed to auto delete found objects and I guess considers it's job done. You haven't answered my other question about the Hidden protected operating system files and whether they should be checked after this is over.

This is all a matter of preference and whether or not others who don't know how to treat such files.

Mine are always exposed, but I have a pretty good idea about how to treat em.

So that's one you'll have to decide for yourself.

Ok, that last logfile looks ok to me, any more pop ups? Let me know.

I get the fact of two virus scans, but I'm not sure what to make of 'found two today'?

Found two more virus scans or pop ups? Sorry for not getting it.:p

I found two viruses today and I don't know where they're coming from. Whether they haven't been thoroughly cleaned by my current anti virus programs is a question mark. I'm really confused right now.

Ohhh.....ok, well what are the file paths and what apps found them, details will help us fugue that out.

BTW, have you reset your system restore recently? Lots of avs find infections in system restore or in other quarantined folders, from other apps. So it would be a good idea to reset system restore and perhaps empty all the anti-spyware quarantine folders out.

Lets get some details first tho.
