I ask because all the new folders I create open in a large maximized window first time.
Sure I can resize each one afterwards but I'd rather set all new folders to open in a smaller sized window by default, preferably with some kind of tweak rather than with the aid of a third party software.

    Thankyou & Hello

Hi Will, If you right-click on a short-cut to the Prog. and choose "Properties" you will see "Run" with a drop-down arrow . Choose whichever you wish!!!

    Will Marshall--
I presume you mean new windows, not folders.
Firstly, if you can change the size of the window, it is not officially "Maximized" (showing two little superimposed squares in the middle one of the three boxes at the very right top of the window). Maximized windows cannot be moved or have their size changed. I suspect you are seeing only one square. That type of window can be moved and have its size changed.
You seem to be talking about "New Windows ".
The usual way to have a New Window open in a size you choose is as follows:
Open a New Window, drag the edges or corners to the size and shape you want. Now close the first window--the one from which you opened the New Window. Then close the New Window.
The next time you open a New Window it should remember the size and shape you chose.

    Thanks both

Try this I hope it will convey what I mean. :)

    right click on desktop
    select new
    select folder
click on newly created folder to open it

It opens in a full window on xp

whereas on 98se for example it opens in a small window first time
and all subsequent times without me having to resize them

This is what I want for newly created folders in xp

    What do you reckon ?

Is this default governed by a registry setting ?

This is what I tried, which worked for me:

Create a folder icon on the desktop as you described. Don't rename it (so it just says New Folder). Double click on it to open it; resize it to what you want. Close it and delete the icon on the desktop.
Then create a new folder icon, and it should open the size you set the previous one to before closing and deleting it.

I repeated that several times, and each time the new one opened the size I'd set the previous one to (and then deleted).

So in my case, the new size was remembered. I presume that is in the registry somewhere, but I haven't found out where.

One other possibility, if that does not work for you: Folder options, view tab, do you have remeber each folder's view settings checked?

mickzer--I guess we both misunderstood the question.

JRosenfeld--Your first suggestion works! Now we all have learned something.
And the check in Windows|Folder Options|View tab is probably necessary as part of your suggestion rather than being " one other possibility ".

JRosenfeld thankyou for coming so close :)

All is well as you describe [including after a reboot] until the new folder is renamed before opening it. :D

I need that extra step because renaming before opening is so much more convenient.

98se can do it, so surely it is possible for the mighty <cough> cough> xp :p

but just how is eluding me - and most of the web it seems - without using a programme like Actual Window Guard, which I don't want to use.

Will Marshall--Bummer. I did not try renaming the New Folder.

How about resizing the folder, then in the New Folder (of whatever name) click Tools|Folder Options|View tab|Folder Views|click "Apply to all Folders "|Apply|OK?

I can't access my pc which has xp right now to experiment but I'm pretty sure I have that setting, I'll check next time with a new folder.

    Nope !

    Any which way I try
naming the new folder before opening causes it to open full size.

    It must be something simple.
