Eldanar - Welcome to the Board :)

I will try and make this a straightforward as possible for you - step by step ...

You have downloaded SmitfraudFix - smitfraudfix.zip - this is a compressed file and the contents must be extracted to a folder on your Desktop.

I am assuming that you are running XP and will be using the Extraction Wizard.

Right click on the zip file and click on Extract all.

The Extraction Wizard opens > click on next > Select a Destination > click on Browse > click on Desktop > click on OK > click on next and the files will be extracted. A Window will open showing the contents of your Desktop - close it and go to the Desktop and you should see a new folder on it - SmitfraudFix.

When you have achieved that post back and we will proceed with the next step.

    Yes :)

    Now the next stage ....

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double click on Smitfraudfix.cmd

If a Security Warning pops up hit the Run button

A command window appears > press any key to continue

On the line with the flashing cursor 'Enter your choice (1.2 ....) type 1 and press Enter

The program scans your system and when the scan has completed a Notepad window opens containing the scan report.

Select Edit from the menu bar then Select All from the dropdown menu - the text is highlighted in blue

Select Edit from the menu bar then Copy

Return to your thread here and hit Reply and right click on the white area of the message pane and select Paste from the menu which appears. The report will be pasted into your reply.

Do that and we'll move on to the next step.

BTW close down Notepad and close the command window by clicking on the x in the top right hand corner.

OK - the next step ....

You may like to print out these instructions as you will be unable to connect to the Internet to read them while in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.
In Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process - a copy of this file is saved as C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Normal Mode and post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread.

Edited by PeteC to rectify omission - see post #8

No - the idiot is at this end :D

In copying and pasting those instructions which I am modifying for your use I omitted the line ....
You are doing just great :) The infection should be gone as you noted, but the final check is to run HijackThis ....

Double click on hijackthis.exe and select 'Do a System Scan and save a logfile'.

Your system will be scanned and a report will open in Notepad. Follow the procedure I have already outlined to copy and paste the report here.

    Almost there :)

Boot into Safe Mode again, scan with HJT and place a checkmark against these entries - then hit the Fix Selected button.

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{C24978AE-D6D6-4F90-A660-3FBCFE51C02E}: NameServer = 194.72.0.114 194.74.65.69

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: Classes - C:\WINDOWS\system32\aqd.dll (file missing)

Reboot into normal mode, scan again and post the log here.

The SmitfraudFix log is fine - infection has been cleaned :)

You should have a clean system once you have fixed those entries above, but please post the new HJT log for final confirmation.
