I will be putting my old computer in a garage sale and I'm wondering what to do with the hard drive before selling it: just format it or format and reinstall the old operating system? Also, is formatting the best way to get rid of personal data in the computer? Thanks for suggestions!

ps. move this to proper forum if this is not where it belongs

A simple format does not securely remove all the data on the drive - it is recoverable.

I suggest you download and run Eraser 5.7 and wipe the disk completely by overwriting to US gov standards - all is explained in the Help file. Then reload the old operating system.

Thanks not only for the quick response but for the link to the free eraser software! I will certainly try this.

If you can restore your computer from CDs, go to the hard drive manufacturer's site and do a low level format. It takes a long time and will wipe it totally clean. The reinstall the OS. Who wants a computer that doesn't boot to something?
