When I try and open outlook express I find the same Server error.
I find that the server in the options section has changed from pop.supanet.com (the correct address) to 127.0.0.1.
I asked my server for the reason and he said that Macaffee was responsible. and I should disable the email scanning.
I have done everything but still have to go thro the procedure of typing in the correct servor details which is a real nuisance.
Any suggestions welcome.I have used outlook express for many years on different PC's and never had this happen before,

    doreen1942 - Welcome to the Board :)
I am a little confused by the options section - would you please spell out the exact path to where you have to reset the server.

    I suspect Tools > Accounts > highlight account > Properties > Servers.

I am scratching around for a solution on this. Whilst I agree that email scanning can pose a problem it would seem that turning it off has not effected a solution.

    Check this please ....

In Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Email - is Outlook Express the default?

Then look in your Hosts file (I assume you are running XP?) - it will open in Notepad ....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Is there any entry there relating to pop.supanet.com? 127.0.0.1 is the local host - your computer.

If you are on dialup make a new connection to supanet ....

Control panel > Network Connections > New Connection Wizard and use your existing dial up connection properties (right click > Properties) as a source of data only. Do not right click on it > Copy as this will only replicate the possibly faulty connection.

Please post your Operating System - XP, 98 .... and version of Outlook Express.

doreen1942--Agree with everything PeteC has suggested.
But I thought I would ask:
Are you saying you have tried changing "127.0.0.1 " to 'pop.supanet.com" (without the quotes)|Apply|OK only to find it has changed back the next time you try to use OE?
Maybe the idea of disabling McAfee email scanning is not bad.
P.S. Also thought I would mention that my Incoming email address is mail.xxx.com and not pop.xxx.com, but each email service provider does things differently. What is on the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) line?

    mail server

I did everything suggested and shall now try typing mail.supanet.com as suggested instead of pop.supanet.com.*
The strange thing is that my son-in-law has the same problem with Tiscali . We both use MacAfee and have tried changing everything that has been suggested .
We both use broadband ADSL and Windows XP plus SP2.

*Just had to change back to pop.supanet.com as it caused problems.

It is not just coincidence that two computers with McAfee both have the same problem - there must be a conflict somewhere between McAfee and OE . You might check that McAfee is not blocking supanet or tiscali - I'm not familiar with McAfee so I can't tell you where to look for a blocked list. This is an unlikely senario as you are able to connect to the internet and to OE once the correct mail server is typed in.

I would be inclined to uninstall/remove everything associated with supanet, doublecheck that email scanning is turned off in Mcafee, disable McAfee and reinstall supanet. Doing so would setup your email connection again. Remember to re-enable McAfee before connecting to the internet.

If that fails to resolve the problem another suggestion is to uninstall McAfee and replace it with AVG Free - I know this works perfectly well with email scanning enabled in conjunction with OE 6 as that is the combination I am using on my laptop.

I agree with Pete. It's almost a sure bet it has something to do with McAfee's email scanning feature. More than likely it gets changed to 127.0.0.1 by McAfee because it sets itself up as a proxy server at that address. Why it still does it when you disable the email scanning feature is kind of puzzling to me though. Are you sure you're disabling it correctly? Try disabling it and rebooting immediately afterward.

Have you ever entered your email server info into McAfee? I don't have the program either but my guess is that there's a place in the options to enter your email server info. If it's not there, you'd not be able to retrieve or send mail with the email scanning enabled. If the info is there, you should be able to leave the address in OE at 127.0.0.1 and the email scanner should take care of the rest.

A friend of mine has what appears to be an identical problem. Tiscali deny all knowledge of any problem but I have used Thunderbird as alternative to Outlook Express without solving the problem. I am going to look at AVG to replace Mcafee as others have reported problems with Norton and Panda.

I have now rid myself of all McAfee applications and am using AVG anti-virus. My son-in-law has done the same.
We have no problem at all now with Outlook Express.
I am grateful for all the suggestions and hope it will be useful in the future for other people with the same problem.
    Regards to all

Well it looks like McAfee was the culprit :) Thanks for the update and glad to hear that the problem is resolved.

    macafee and outlook

I had trouble recently with Macafee resetting my incoming mail server on Outlook to 127.0.0.1 or something similar.
i got tired of resetting the server every time I logged on.
Dell software support 'solved' it for me by helping me to delete the spamkiller option on Macafee and charged me €50 for the privilege.
    How can Macafee justify this?
Anyone have an idea how to get in touch with Macafee? as in a real person on a phone?
Let me know, I'd be most grateful.
Judging by most mails on this subject I should have come here first before I blew the cash.

    MacAfee server problem

    Hi
I had problems when I tried to get in touch with McAfee and in the end I actually removed everything connected with them off my PC.I tried removing the spam killer option first but it made no difference so I removed the lot, even though I had paid for the full Security Suite. I refuse to let a company try and take over my computer like this and I think they are a disgrace. They are still pestering me to "renew my subscription" even tho' it doesnt run out until October.
However my son in law has had very big problems trying to remove all the McAfee files and has had to pay someone to do it.They really messed up his PC with their tricks. He is an advanced user too !!!

I have no issues with Panda and OE. It doesn't interact like McAfee when scanning email.

I was browsing many forums and couldn't find the answer. Just have sorted it on one box so for other still serching people: As mentioned above this is a problem caused by wrong configuration of McAfee AntiSpam email account - just a bit more at http://www.externalit.co.uk/support/topic.asp?TID=1
