Hello Everyone: I just brought up my *.tmp files and went to delete them and they would not delete, does this have to be done in Safe Mode? Thanks, Tom

If you select the temp files with older than today's date, they should delete OK. The ones with today's date are probably in use.

safe mode is a good idea.

where are u bringing up u'r *.tmp files? or how really?

note win's systemtools/diskcleanup utility. it should work for 'temp' files.

The straightforward route to temp files is ....

Start > Run > type in %temp% > OK - all are safe to delete, but note Bmoore1129's comment on those in use.

    Also look in Windows\Temp.

I will try it in safe mode, Thanks

Usually what happens when you select all of them is, it will delete files until it comes to one that's in use. Then it stops and tells you it can't delete file whatever file it is and the whole process stops there. Then, if you select them all except the file that it couldn't delete, it will delete the rest of them unless it runs into another one along the way that's in use. I never could understand why MS didn't make it so you could click OK and then have it continue deleting the rest of the selected files but that's the way it works.

FWIW, when you restart from safemode, those tmps you couldn't delete will be recreated again if the program that made them is set to run at startup. An example of one that comes to mind is MS's anti spyware program. If memory serves me correctly, it creates two temp file that are always in use as long as the program is running.

I see what you mean, also, there were ones in there that had temps in system32 and they would not delete at all. I found some has you mentioned that were running and bypassed them and (most) all deleted, this was in Safe Mode only! Thanks

tomxp--I find the simplest way to delete Temp files that can safely be deleted is to use System Security Suite.
    http://www.igorshpak.net/
However, if I have installed a program in that session, I do not use the SSS program until after a reboot. Some installations require some Temp files to complete the installation when you reboot.
The above program can easily be configured to delete several other files/folders such as Temporary Internet Files, History, etc.

Yeah, that's a pretty slick little program Jim. I've been using it for quite a while now. I like the way you can configure it to include files and folders of your choice. It's great for getting rid of things like those pesky zalog*.txt files and tmp files that Zone Alarm insists on filling up it's windows\internet log folder with. If you let it go long enough you'll end up with loads of them in there. I might be wrong but I don't think they ever get deleted unless you do it yourself. Sure beats having to drill down through windows explorer to do it.

    - even if you disable logging (I use eTrust which is ZA in another set of clothes :)) there are still entries there - basically empty files.

    tomxp--You are welcome. Enjoy.
P.S. When you click SSS's "Clear Selected Items ", there will probably be a brief period of apparent inactivity. Just wait it out. SSS is doing its job. At the end you will be invited to reboot.

This thread's a little old, but has anybody tried Disk Cleaner?

    http://www.robertenfemke.nl/~diskclean/

Mike Flynn recommended it a while back in an old post and I've been using it myself since.

Disk Cleaner really cleans out a lot of stuff....Nothing important I presume. Well, it will clean out some important HP Printer 2110xi driver files, but I think someone did a poor job of designing that driver to begin with.

It's a very small program.....It removes a lot more than temp files too.

It will clean out Firefox & Opera files, plus something called a forced/windows/temp cleaner, which is listed separate from the temp files selection.

Not sure what the difference is between the last two though.
