    Hi Bob,
You may need to find which program created the copy and use the File menu -> Open to open the file the DVD disk.

Another way would be to use My Computer or Windows Explorer to locate the backup file on the disk and double-click (open) it. The backup program may then run automatically.

The backup was probably made by the DVD burning software that came with the DVD burner. Some DVD burning programs are Nero, Easy DVD, Sonic....

By the way Bob, it seems like you have a DVD burner, a CD burner and a CDrom in that computer. The DVD burner should perform all the tasks you want for burning DVDs and CDs and reading disks as well.
I only have a DVD burner and CDrom on my main machine, the CDrom to just do CD reading to take some of load off the DVD drive. If you run different types of burning software on one computer you may find you get problems when each want to control the drivers for the drives.

    Hi Bob and Matt,

I'm a little confused here, so for the sake of clarity:

before leaving Michigan I drag and drop all my back up on a blank dvd
Bob, I assume that you used Roxio's drag & drop to do that.

You may need to find which program created the copy and use the File menu -> Open to open the file the DVD disk.
Matt, that's not technically a backup in the sense that a backup program created them, such as XP's or a 3rd party's, they are generic DVD files which the DVD burner's firmware and XP can read without any software. In other words you don't need special software to be able to access those files.

I have to load the cd for the burner on this computer and I also have to put Roxio Creator
Bob, that cd for the Burner are the drivers. I assume because its an external USB device, that there are special drivers for it, mine is internal, no drivers needed.

You should not need Roxio to read back the files, do need them of course to burn DVD files.

    Regards - Charles

If the cd was made with Roxio's drag and drop (this is the new name for direct cd, isn't it?) you'd have to install the Roxio software or something like Nero's InCD to be able to read the disk. At the very least you would have to install a UDF reader. XP doesn't have support for reading cd's that are written in UDF format.

I am surprised though, that when you put the disk in the drive you weren't prompted to install the UDF driver. Usually when you make a disk using Roxio in this way, it also puts the driver (UDF reader) on the disk and if you don't have it installed on a computer that you put the cd in, it prompts you for this.

For the rest of you, the following is from bobm735's first post.
I wonder if we're misunderstanding here. I read this as though the drive doesn't show up in My Computer at all when it's plugged in. Not that there's a problem accessing the drive when double clicking on it in My Computer.

Which way is it? Can you see the drive in My Computer but just can't read the disk or is the drive absent from My Computer all together?

    Hi Zander,

I just went thru the exercise of creating a DVD with Roxio's Drag&Drop.

Created it on the XP installation where I have Roxio installed and then read it on the installation where I have no burning software of any kind installed and never had other than of course XP's built in CD burner.

And as I remembered, worked just fine. Drag&Drop does ask if the disk will be used only on the host computer or on other systems/media when it closes out the DVD.

    Regards - Charles

I guess we have a bit of a misunderstanding here. When I use Direct CD I've never bothered to close a disk. I always used cdrw's with it and closing it kind of defeated the purpose for me. If you closed the disk, then yes, you would be able to read it without any software. I was just assuming (something I know you shouldn't do) that the disk was still in UDF format. If so, you'd need to install a driver to be able to read it.

    Hi Bob,

What are file extensions and properties of these files?

For future reference, use Roxio's copy files options instead of drag&drop. You can see that once on another system, that becomes problematic.

    Hi Bob,

The file extension indicates the use of Drag&Drop to create the files. What I meant is the use of the Creator Classic portion > Copy files to Disc.

Had to go back to the OS that has Roxio installed.

When you bring up Roxio, next to Music > Data > copy files to Disc. Same as a CD write, if DVD, with a size increase: 4.7 or 8 GB on a dual layer DVD-R. I always do it this way for DVD's I plan to load out to systems other than my own, don't have to worry about whether a UDF reader is installed or not - works every time.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Wrote that because that is the way you should create the DVD if you're going to take it "on the road ", not use drag & drop.

That is a reference on the file extension you see and Roxios's support forum.

The only thing that I can think of doing at this point is to try to add a file to that DVD with drag & drop from your current computer and then close the disc out. In post #8, my answer to Zander: Drag&Drop does ask if the disk will be used only on the host computer or on other systems/media when it closes out the DVD That's what you should try to do.

I don't think so, as long as you're using the DVD Rom with this disc.

I can't answer you with absolute certainty because mine is an internal ROM.

Did you try to use D&D to drag a file to the disc and then close it out?

    Regards - Charles

    Bob I understand that :)

What I would like for you to do is: try to drag a file, any file - a small one - to the DVD using Roxio's D&D leaving the files you have there alone, this would be an addition.

If that works, then in the D&D menu - eject the DVD. At this point, you should be asked whether this DVD is for this system, or to be used on other computers - DVD players, and you say yes.

I'm taking you thru this execise because I don't think that this DVD is closed out and obviously not able to be manipulated by explorer, and by closing it out, hope to make it so.

I forgot to ask whether this DVD is a R or an RW. Looking back thru this thread, you don't say, we're just assuming that.

    Regards - Charles
