I have 2 desktops and a Inspiron 8200 on my network. The desktops are connected via a NIC and the Inspiron via Belkin Pre-N card. A Belkin Pre-N Router connects them all. It seems I'm having trouble with the Inspiron's wireless connection. I have internet access, I can print to other printers on the desktops, and I setup Quickbooks to access the file on a desktop. However the Inspiron can't see the desktops in Workgroup Computers, can't access the shared files that show up in My Network and it doesn't show up in the desktops Workgroup Computers. The desktops can't print to the Inspiron's printer. All this happens with all firewalls disabled. How can I get full access with all the computers?

    Thank you.

If all the PCs are running NT4 or later, click on start, on run, key in cmd and OK to open a cmd window.

Once there key in the following and then post the results of the text file you will create to the forum. One fro a working desktop and one from the machine that isn't behaving.

    ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

If any of the PCs are running 9X/ME you won't have that feature available and will need to get to the run line and key in winipcfg and then when the GUI window opens, click for details and then copy the same information as you find in c:\ipconfig.txt and post that.

As suggested by someone, I uninstalled Trend Micro PC-Cillin (not just disable) on all the computers and rebooted them. Now all 3 computers are visible in Workgroup Computers on all computers, however the Wireless XP Home Dell only shows the Dell's shared folders. The XP Pro Shuttle and the XP Home Gateway (hard wired NIC's) shows each others shared folders but not the Dell's.

    That helps.

In addition to the ipconfig information I asked for in post #2 (and still need)
    - is the Guest account enabled on any/all the PCs? It will have been enabled by default on the Home systems and disabled by default on the Pro system.
    - is Use Simple File Sharing checked - windows explorer->tools->folder options->view and toward the bottom.
    - are you logging on to the PCs? If so, are you using a non-blank password?
    - (for future setup advice) is security any sort of issue on your network or are you comfortable with all users having unrestricted rights to all PCs?

The guest account is off on all 3 computers. Should they be on?

Use Simple File Sharing was checked in Pro.

The Dell needs a logon password, the other 2 don't.

User security is minimal here. One machine has a Limited account just so things arn't accendtly messed up.

I did It! I decided to run the Network Wizard again with the uninstalled firewalls and all is seen in network land! Now I hope it will stay that way once PC-Cillin is reinstalled (may have to do some tweaking).

One thing...There's a few folders that show up on Network Places on other computers that are not shared. I made then shared then unshared while trying to figure out my previous problem. They never showed up before but now they do (and they're not shard)! It's been over an hour and computers rebooted but they are still there. I can't just delete the folders from Network Places right? That's like trying to delete the actual folder and not just the path, right? Is there a manual way to remove the bogus icon?

    James

    P.S. Does anybody live here???

If they aren't being shared anymore just rightclick and delete. If you need to add a share that isn't showing up and is in fact being shared then:
Go to "Add a Network Place" on the left side of the folder open it and click Next>Choose another network location>next>browse> follow the whole path starting with Entire Network>Microsoft Window Network>Workgroup>workgroup computer>Shared folder.
If you go straight to the folder listed it won't work

Weekends are sorta iffy on here. Lots of us are on regularly during the work week but may skip weekends.
