Win: O/S=XP-sp-2/Home Edition: During boot to splash screen I keep getting the pop-up "your sys. has no paging file or file is too small. To fix the problem go to etc. and change etc." Have tried various settings including letting windows manage it but still keep getting the same results. Any help would be appreciated.......Den....................

Most likely a corrupt page file. Possibly an app fussing if you have no page file on the system partition - it needs at least a small one.

In the Virtual Memory window (see the picture) set for no page file on all partitions.

Reboot and delete any pagefile.sys files. You'll need windows explorer set to show hidden files and not to hide system files to see the file.

In Virtual Memory again, uncheck the 'no page file' box and set up page file(s) to suit yourself then reboot again.

Great 1-page article Here on what it is, how it works, how big to make it, etc.

If you have a harddrive on another channel you can move your paging file to that drive. It will make your computer run slightly faster. The rule I follow is set the min size of the paging file equal to the RAM in the system, set the max to 3X the RAM.

If this has just started, it's very possible that it is SpyWare related.

    Download, install and run SpyBot.
Do an update first, before doing a scan.

    pagin file XP-Home

Okay Guys thanks fer the reply and here are the results......tried no paging file, but could not find pagefile.sys showing all fles in exployer upon reboot. Then tried letting windows determine it and computer would NOT boot normally and had to use safe mode, still could not find pagefile.sys. Tried setting pagefile to 256x768 would not boot. Then in safe mode again set to no page file and computer booted normally and actually at speed of what one would expect fer this system. No matter what I did or how did it never could locate pagefile.sys in order to detete it....Den....................

Try Agent Ransack to locate pagefile.sys . It is a much better search utility than Windows Explorer and free.

You will still need to have WE set to show all files and not to hide system files.

    pagefile

Well I tried using agent ransack to locate the file "pagefile.sys" and it can't find it either. Made absolutly sure that the settings in exployer were set correctly also. Don't know what give here unless some how the O/S is corrupt...Windows keeps saying that pageing file is too small and that it ha generated a larger pagefile and you would think that it would be in windows exployer somewhere!......Den.......................

    re

I dont need to worry much about mines cos its on a seperate partition get powerquest partition magic 8.0 and create a new partition and move it to that one it makes windows well faster. Say like you have 256mb you times that by 1.5 that gives you 384.0 so if u make a 500mb partition that does fine then you delete the one in c:/ then it will reboot then u add the page file to the new partition works like a dream :)

Excellent advice for many systems but not for others. Take a look at the link from post #2 for details.

    SYMPTOMS
Your computer may seem to stop responding (hang) while Windows is loading your personal settings, or you may receive the following error message after you log on to Windows:
    Limited Virtual Memory
Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small.

To fix this problem, go to System in Control Panel, click the Advanced tab, and under Performance, click Settings. On the Advanced tab, click Change. Click 'Custom size,' and then type an initial or maximum paging file size.
If you view the configuration settings for the paging file by following the instructions in the error message, you may receive the following message:
Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified.
After you click OK, the settings for your paging file may seem to be correct.
    CAUSE
This error message may occur if Windows tries to create a paging file on an NTFS volume, but the System and Administrators accounts do not have the correct NTFS permissions on the volume.
    RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, give the System and Administrators accounts full control of the NTFS volume on which the paging file is configured. To do this: Follow the instructions in the link provided.

----Do you have or use Intels application Accelerator?-------------------
If the problem happens at boot and the machine has an Intel chipset, the message may be caused by an early version (before version 2.1) of Intel’s "Application Accelerator." Uninstall this and get an up-to-date version from Intel’s site. Apparently this is a known problem for people who need to use this application. I really didn't spend to much time exploring the fine points of this possibility, not knowing if it is even applicable to you personally. If it is, you may seek or explore this further.
